In certain cultures the left hand is the hand that is used to wipe after going to the toilet, and therefor it is considered as 'dirty' and an insult to offer anything to people with this hand. However if you are a white anglosaxon then it is not likely to cause offence. If you have a lot of ASIAN or MIDDLE EASTERN friends then depending on how long they have been living in the west (i.e. are they recent immigrants) then it might be considered insulting to them.

By politesse..it has been taught..." to give something..not only money..,with your right hand..." I have seen that in many different cultures...and..if the person is left handed..by accident give..with the left hand...it can be..forgiven..but..it's most the right hand!!..and when you do it that way..people realize that you have been taught the same...as many others...in other countries..why not to perform that..just in case..one day you deal..with people for who it really is the only good manner they have been practicing..all their lives.( it's usually a gesture done from the youngest to the oldest..but because..for you to do not be catch ed up into it..it 's done towards any ages..)
