Is it the UAW's fault that the big 3 are going to go under?

The UAW is "not" entirely at fault however they are a significant contributing factor.
Through contract negotiations they have continued to raise the wages and benefit costs to a point where the Big 3 can no longer be cost competitive. The only opportunity for the Big 3 to restructure is by filing chapter 11 which allows the current labor contracts to be revisited as well the legacy costs of the retired employees.

The quality has significantly improved on N/American vehicles however the productivity has not. Flexibility within their manufacturing locations are not nimble enough to change lines for new products and this has put them behind on bringing new more fuel efficient vehicles to market.

Did the union cause this? "No" however if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

Mike C
No! I will explain why. For many years people have thought that the Unions rape the corporation, not true. We are simply organized to make sure we have good paying jobs, and health care is provided out of the profits, throw in a pension too. These companies make billions and can afford to pay their workers these wages, it really is a small percentage from the profit, like 3-5% percent is all we take. Now the execs are the money makers getting hundreds of thousands and even millions in bonuses from the profits. Can you justify 1 man getting a 15 million dollar check from a company made up of hundreds of thousands of workers. Can't figure that up right now but that would pay for alot of research and redevelopment! We the people stand together to fight for what is right, I wouldn't be able to make it on $10 an hour plus paying for family insurance, neither will these soon to be unemployed auto workers!

An Informed Voter!
Perhaps a little.

But the far bigger fault lies with Big 3 management who stubbornly refused to read the writing on the wall, and bet the farm that we'd keep buying 18 mpg SUVs forever.

Part UAW - they have made concessions but it's too late.
Part Management - from the EV1, expensive two seater that soccer moms wouldn't drive, to the Hummer, just a series of bad decisions
Part Government - no energy policy, no health policy (high health costs exacerbate the problem)
Part anyone associated - weak brands, poor quality, undistinguished design

GM should be broken up, mostly shut down. Gotta save the Volt. Keep Ford going. Chrysler your time is up.

Harrison S
yes it is 100% there fault because of the UAW the auto companies have had to pay people more money then they shouid have been paid for very little work

MavistheMaven
The UAW may be partly responsible, by pushing for big salaries and probably by keeping a status quo of auto workers who don't build the highest-quality cars that they could. Maybe they should have pushed for higher engineering standards along with higher salaries.

But they are workers. It's management and engineering that are more at fault. It's not just about making a wrong decision about SUVs. They've been skimping on quality for literally decades. How is it that Japan and Germany can design cars that last for over 200,000 miles and work reliably, and American cars start failing at 40,000 miles? That's bad design, bad workmanship.

The whole point of free market forces is that competition will lead to the best products and services surviving, and cause the ones that aren't as good (or that don't meet consumer needs and desires as well) to fail.
