Phantom of the Opera
Is it true that US / World recession comes in a cycle (5 years ?) ?
Why is this so ?

Gervy P
It's not necessarily true, but it's a handy way to think about business cycles.

A recession is a downturn in the business cycle that occurs when the real gross national product (GNP)—the total output of goods and services produced by the U.S. population—declines for two consecutive quarters, or six months. Recessions are usually characterized by a general decrease in output, income, employment, and trade lasting from six months to a year. A more severe and long-lasting economic crisis is known as a depression.

Prior to entering the recession phase of the business cycle, the economy reaches the peak of its expansion. When it nears the full-employment level of output, its rate of growth begins to slow. Prices are generally rising, so consumers demand fewer products and services. As a result, companies begin to hire fewer new workers, and demand falls even further with the reduction in incomes. Productivity and output begin to decline as costs increase, and companies respond by decreasing investment. Gradually, the overall economy contracts, as the decrease in investment reduces production and employment. Eventually, government intervention and the natural progression of the business cycle cause the recession to end, or reach a trough or turning point, and the upswing stage begins.

Cause than the next point is reached and so many firms trying to earn without working. So only the goods continue and the bads die. It's always an up and down.
It's a kind of cleaning effect.

No its not specifically 5 years. it does go in cycles though.
1st comes prosperity where GDP is high. means people are buying and selling a lot.

2nd comesrecession(what we are in now) Economical activity slows down a bit

3rd-if a recession gets really bad it does into a depression. it doesnt happen that much and i dont think it will happen now

4th After everything come recovery. the economical activity starts to speed up again.

This cycle is repeated but there is no specific time for each.

Barry auh2o
Definately cyclical, but no specific time table.

We will recover, there will be a long period of prosperity, then there will be another recession.
Whether or not Clinton was president has absolutely nothing to do with it.
This is what happens.

1. Learned and wise individuals see that there is an improvement on the horizon.
2. Things do improve and everybody is happy.
3. Everybody thinks it will last forever.
4. learned and wise individuals see there are problems on
the horizon.
5. These problems surface, and problems begin to show up.
6. People think things could not get any worse
7. See # 1.

History always repeats.. we don't learn from our mistakes.

No Clinton was President for 8 years and there was no recession

Yes, but I'm not sure it's 5-years. I think the average is about 7 years.

It tends to run as long as people's memories or through generations. Right around the time people start to forget what happened before, get too comfortable with their current lot, or a new generation of spenders/work force enters the picture is when a new ripple takes place. No one seems to learn from prior mistakes, or they simply forget/rewrite history regarding what caused it and what took place.
