Brian "R" | Is it wrong that i don't feel bad for the failing American auto industry when workers make 3X what I make? ? |
Additional Details I am not feeling bad for myself, because i am still in school, and don't expect to be making that kind of money. However, my mother is a NURSE who really helps people everyday. She's worked there for 30 years, and make 22 dollars an hour. The STARTING wage for UAW is way more that that...so f*ck off. You want to give these companies $25 Billion, go ahead. Can't wait to say "I told you so"

If someone offered you a job making a very high wage, even if that wage were thought to be quite excessive for the position, would you turn it down because it was too much and unfair to others?
The issue is that people have lost jobs. They have families and bills like anyone else. Would you expect them not to accept the salary they were being paid because someone else thought it unfairly high?
It's not the workers fault they are out of work. Whether their wage was fair or not, what's happening to them right now is krap. Alas, that same krap (getting layed off) is occuring around the country.
The division of my company (defense contractor in FL) that I work for gave notice to 47 people 2 wks ago...in my department of just over 50 people, 10 of those 47 were ours. It's happening everywhere, high wages or not. |

Depends how you look at it, they maybe skilled workers and worked hard in education and life to get the money they're on and also people live to their means, so the guys will prob have large houses with nobody who can buy them and with large mortgages to pay.
The people we should be firing is all the incompetent politician's who are on ridiculous money |

so you're listening to what the media is saying...you realize many of those workers are just general laborers and not engineers as the media seems to be spouting. general laborers really don't make that much. they also have families and can't afford to lose their job just as you can't afford to lose yours. |

Not at all... although it is the UAW that you should blame, not the workers. |

I don't care one way or the other. Is it our fault they choose this job, or that their dad got them into the union and now they are in trouble? That's life, do something else. Jobs are lost all the time to financial hardship. If people in the auto industry didn't see this coming years ago and didn't do anything to be prepared to bad. |

Nope. I feel the same way. Barely-skilled labor should not be pulling down that kind of cash, especially at the risk of the company as a whole failing. |

Would you still feel that way if you had a job there, & had been working there for 25 plus years? & now you are close to retirement , but going to lose everything you have worked for your whole life?
It is not only the highly paid auto workers who will lose their jobs, it will also be the people that make the parts that go on the cars. And those people are making little more than minimum wage. We are talking a hundred thousand plus people that will be out of work, if the big 3 is not bailed out. So think about that for a minute.^ |

I don't feel bad about the CEO's. They seem to get paid more when they are let go. I feel worse for the laborers that depended on the CEO's to make good business decisions and keep their companies afloat, which apparantly they didn't. The people who weld, assemble, etc... what do they get if the company tanks? Even if they're suppose to make 3X on paper, it's nothing if they're laid off. |

You are a failure in life so you don't feel badly for people getting laid off? I wouldn't say it was wrong, per se, but it is definitely a reflection of your character. |

I don't feel bad for them either but I don't feel bad for too much of anything though. There's always a cause that you can feel bad for that someone else may not. I think there are more important things than auto workers like starving children, cancer patients, sex slaves, abused animals, etc. I'm sure there are more important things that you feel bad for too. So don't feel bad that you have no sympathy for that situation. There are more important things in your life. I'm sure not too many auto workers would care if you lost your job either. |

Are you sure that it is more you feeling bad for yourself? Really, all you are doing in this question is making yourself sound like a whiner who doesn't have the ambition to do something better and make more money.
So, right or wrong, does it matter? |

Lynn

I agree with you totally. |
