Luckii | Is my manager treating me right? |
I I work at PetSmart, and have been working there for the past 6 months. I work so hard. I'm 17, and I'm doing internet school for my last semester of highschool, so I have open availability.
She's working me 6 days a week with 41 hours, usually. I work very VERY hard, I've only gotten one raise for a 3 month evaluation, making $6.90 an hour. I'm not even lead associate, which she's told me that she was making me a lead for my department then turned around and made another person lead.
I have the most hours, and everyone else is a lot older than me with open availablity. I never call in sick, not once! And, if someone else calls in - she asks me to come in.
She just throws these projects at me, and only me - and then she gets very mad when I can't do them because we are a very busy store with lots of customers to satisfy. I've tried my best to show her that I'm a good worker, and everything I do, "Well, that's not good enough."
Am I trying too hard? What am I supposed to do |

Lucy,
You are a smart girl. You know better than to let someone treat you this way. You need to stand up for yourself and outline all the problems like you have done here. Set it up nice and neat, print it out and have a sit down talk with her. It's likely she will "get it" and fix the problems. If she is unreasonable or doesn't... go above her head. There is always someone higher up. Contact that person and speak with them about it. Again, outlining all the issues.
Document everything. Write it all down and write down anything you can remember. I would let it go for another week or two, documenting all. Your hours, call ins, projects, etc. That way there is no room for dispute.
I don't know all the regulations about "firing" and all that, but if it happens and she can get away with it... your probably better off finding a better job. You might start looking for another job anyway, at a pet daycare, training facility, kennel etc. I know you've put a lot into this job, but sometimes enough is enough.
Don't let her walk all over you! Your better than that girl!

Lucy, your a good person and you are letting this person run all over you....have you ask to talk to them in private, no, well its about time.
you sit down at home, make a list and do not leave anything out....especially the part where you work 6 days a week and have never called in sick
they are giving you all the projects, because you apparently do them so well, they want no one else to do them....this does seem a little unfair to you, but think of it this way, you are trusted, they know you do it and you do it right.
about the lead position, have you been talking about vet school at work, if yes, then they gave the lead associate to someone that is not planning on leaving...
stop and think about it, its not because your not trustworthy, its because they are afraid if and when you get the promotion, you will be leaving soon for vet school.... it is nothing against you, really I dont think it is....
we had a similiar incident at work, a college gal was getting ready to leave to get married, she kept talking about when she would be leaving, and I am the one that had to make the decision to give the Jr. Paralegal position to a person that had been with us a little less time, but was wanting to stay with the firm.....and all my attorneys agreed with me.
so it may be that..
now, the raise, you usually get a 90 day raise which you did, and then the next one is usually 6 mos to a yr later......on review.
but, please do it, talk to the manager and voice your concerns about the work, the promotion, and that you always come in when the others do not.....
stress, and I mean stress you never turn them down.
then next time, just say no, and let it go, dont let it bother you that you said no, you cannot so many days in a row and be expected to do the others work along with yours.
cool off, then talk to them...with an even tone, and no sour look on that face, ha ha
I am an office manager over our firm as well as Sr. Paralegal and sometimes its hard not to give a promotion to a person, but there is always a reason behind the decision....
find your reason, make them tell you, I always explain to my folks and they agree...then they keep on going till they do get a promotion, and I try to make sure they are not forgotten for all their hard work...
good luck |

I'm reading the tea leaves here, and based on what you have said, your employer may be exploiting you a little bit. In other words, can't get enough of a good thing. Hard worker, low pay, and maybe needs to hire more than just you to get the job done right.
There are many kinds of people. Your job is to do your best for you and speak up if you feel mistreated, as compared with others. It won't always get you what you want, but it is likely to get you what you need to know.
And when you know what your need to know, then the decisions you make become so much easier. |

Unfortunately, many managers are like that, and if you switch jobs you'll likely find that out. She knows you're responsible, that's why she asks you to come in when others don't. Keep working your hardest until you are done with school and can get a career. Good luck! |

Like Jordan said, there comes a time when enough is enough.
Your manager knows you will do the work, whatever she gives you; she is taking advantage of you. You're the work horse, and since you are not sticking up for yourself, she is able to pay you little for what you actually do.
If I were you, I would discreetly start looking for another job. There are plenty in the pet industry, whether it be a dog boutique (there is one in my area that has some employees your age, they love it there), or a doggie daycare/boarding... put your resume out there and see what comes up!
You said it yourself, you're a good worker... you deserve to be making more than minimum wage. With your availability, you could be working full time with benefits! |
