gudrun077 | Is pursuing a doctoral degree (full time if given an opportunity) worth leaving the full time job? |

It depends on what you want to do for a living. If you want to be an academic, then yes! And that's a good life, with little pressure and a lot of freedom, especially if you are a liberal. You should check with your preferred graduate schools about the demand for various degrees and the potential salary levels.
If you want to be in business, a Ph.D. will do little good, unless you want to be a Corporate Economist or the like. The big banks have dozens of them, and they are paid VERY WELL. However, it's a small pool. For business, an MBA with a bachelor's in engineering is a gold mine. Any MBA is better than just a BS or BA.
It comes down to the decision to be an academic, or a business person.
Of course, if you love learning, and have a dream to get your Ph.D., then do it. You only get so many chances to fulfill your dreams. |

Absolutely if you can manage it. So many settle for less than their dream or lifetime goal. If you have it in your means then go for it. If you it do you will never look back at 50 or 60 and wish you would have pursued your dream!
And remember all us little people when you make the big time! You will go far! |

it depends on the job and on the potential the doctoral degree would give you. I have left a full time job that didn't pay very well to get a doctoral degree, through which I know people and get projects that advance my career. But if it is hard to get a job as good as the one you have, you'd better keep it. Can't you make it part time and do the doctorate as well? |

In the corporate world, a PhD degree is not very useful, unless you are in research or other scientific fields, and for those, jobs are limited at that level. MBA might be more useful in a corporate world. If you however, want to have an academic career, doing teaching and research at a university, of course you will need a PhD to do that. Good luck. |
