many people on the political left are always suspicious and have negative feelings toward any successful company or individual. why don't you ask the person that said this to detail exactly what corruption he/she feels Starbucks is guilty of? |

i like their coffees. they are rated by Fortune magazine as one of the top 100 companies to work for. they offer good employee benefits, even to part time employees. and their employees are really good at customer service-polite, friendly, and know the products well.
people bash them because they are jealous that they didn't have the idea to sell coffee for $3.00 a cup-and make zillions of dollars. |

Originally Starbucks was a good marketing concept, but sometime during the nineties especially when the company expanded overseas, it gave the impression as being just another corporation more concerned about the bottom line rather than product integrity. It has become too corporatist, and a lot of people seem to be glad that because of its excessive efforts to globalize, it has shuttered many of it's stores. To be fair, The regular coffee is very good (just not the caramel frothy mocha latte stuff), but the stores are not at all like the neighborly coffee houses than one finds in New York, Baltimore, San Francisco, Seattle, etc. Many of those places have character and are locally owned. Community comes first. |

A lot of coffee is (most of it) is not fair trade coffee - and the beans are picked by people who are paid close to nothing - or even slaves. Companies like Starbucks will tell you that their coffee beans come from so many places that they don't know who picked them.
Actually - apparently - you should be able to go into any Starbucks and ask for Fair Trade coffee - and get it. Fair trade means that the beans are tracked and known NOT to be picked by slaves. But I have asked for fair trade coffee in more than one starbucks - and the person working the counter said something like "What? Fair what?" They've never had it available to me.
Also - FYI - most chocolate companies use coa coa beans that are picked by slaves as well. All that halloween chocolate that everybody is downing as I type this was very likely picked by child slaves on the Ivory Coast of Africa. But again - Hersheys and Mars say "We don't know. It comes from so many places - that we just don't know who picked the beans." Very sad. They know damn well that some of it - probably most of it - was picked by slaves. Otherwise it would cost them much more. And it's so unlikely that people will stop eating chocolate - or boycott it. You can buy fair trade chocolate - but it is more expensive.
I hope you will ask your local coffee shops that you support - if their coffee is fair trade or not. It might cost a bit more - but isn't it worth it to know that you're not supporting slavery!?!?!?!? |
