Mr Fawlty
Is the Retail industry under-trained?
No-one ever seems to know anything, you ask
about a product they, haven't got a clue,
if you can't find what your looking for it's
" is there any over there, then we haven't got any"
and when you go to supermarkets these days you don't
get any courtesy now now hello or goodbyes.

I am a retail manger at Toys R Us in the Uk..... we are some of the highest trained people I know.......as a company we send our staff on regular training days..... before the Wii was launched.... my multimedia staff get to spend two days having a go of it and being trained on the "technical" info surrounding it.

Staff are also highly aware of current trends in the toy market (which is one of the fastest moving markets).

We are highly paid..... very highly paid....and get commison based on sales results.

If you've received bad service somewhere blame the company or branch manager.... not the industry as a whole.

Supermarkets are not there to provide customer service..... they compete on price and stock availabilty..... also there are a huge amount of products sold in supermarkets making it difficult to train staff on even a selection of them.

Also many staff work part time in retail.... if they were there 30/40/50 hours a week they would get to know more.

Finally many staff arent there for a retail career... only for some cash while they get through school/uni/life!!! the people who work for me want a satisfying career so they give their all....and are rewarded for it..

take it from someone who worked with the general public for 12 years, there is never any gratitude when you do help, pay is very low, job unrewarding and public think they have a right to speak to you as they please. I did work my *** off that said and i was a helpful member of staff but i just thought id state what its like the other side of the counter. xxx

I used to work in a supermarket and I was never actually trained in anything apart from checkout operation.

However I was great at customer care. Customer care is common sense, and about treating people how you would expect to be treated yourself - well that is always how I went about my job!

I worked as a butcher for both a small firm and also for Safeway and felt that most of the training was adequate - much of it is on the job but when it is there was always someone around. My first task was to know the supermarket/shop layout and to understand where stock was stored in the back.

That said, I take issue with the training of Dixons/Currys and the like - to work in a technical store I'd expect a higher level of training. Its painful to shop there so I always do my research elsewhere and only buy there if they happen to be the cheapest. I'll pay a little over the odds if I receive good service and advice from a different retailer.

I appreciate the pay isn't great which is partly why students and part-timers do a lot, but there are other things an employer can do to make work a happier place. Really, you should look for a retail job you enjoy and want to learn the details, just like any other job or career (I realise that's not always possible but surely most shops should have at least one or two of these people in!)

The big boys tend to train their employees in customer care like Tesco and Asda, Morrison's could do with a little teaching though!

Yes. In fact, I have yet to have a retail job that I would consider myself being properly trained and, being new, I was often too shy to speak up about it.

completely agree.
sorry louise, but if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. everywhere i've been in europe, and lots of friends from australia and america (i work with 20 aussies) all agree that service in this country is appalling. i agree with them.
the thing to remember when you work behind a counter is that you are getting paid and they are spending their money.

and worst of all are "customer services". in most big british companies the customer service department seems to be there to justify bad procedures. at the very most, they'll offer a hollow apology, as long as it doesn't cost anything.

i'm sick of that whole ethos, and i've decided to stop doing the british thing (not complaining). i now complain, to the highest level i can - i've just written to TNT couriers and AOL about disgraceful service.

Lucky
Totally with u!...whats going on there?!
