Jackie A | Is there a difference between an administrative assistant and an executive secretary? |
|
|

The title "administrative assistant" is fairly vague...often, it applies to a wide range of positions, with the duties in each quite different from each other. It covers all kinds of job functions, from filing to processing emails to performing administrative tasks so that the executive has more time for more critical items.
Often, when someone is referred to as a "secretary", their job is more specific to processing correspondence for the executive. This would include internal and external email, processing incoming and outgoing hard-copy letters, and managing (printing, filing) presentations that others give to the executive.
The ideal happy medium is Executive Administrative Assistant (which is what I do). This gives you the opportunity to be involved in and helping your executive get his/her job done, on many levels. You might prepare presentations that he's giving to other execs, assist in processing HR activity, make decisions on the exec's behalf, and essentially act as the exec's left arm.
The website below has a lot of information on salary ranges, as well as job descriptions for a lot of different titles. I highly recommend that you walk through the salary wizard for more detailed info. |

Administrative Assistants generally do basic typing, filing and smaller stuff. Executive Secretary's will generally assist with putting presentations together, scheduling meetings for their boss and more responsibilities since Exec's normally have more on their plate and need an assistant. |

Administrative assistant is a much broader term and could entail many duties that have nothing at all to do with basic clerical skills. |

It depends on the organization. The terms tend to be used as if interchangeble by some. In most cases I think the assistant is a little lower on the food chain with a salary to match. |

I've had both and slept with both... AA's are usually younger, but ES' are better in bed. |

An executive assistant works directly for an executive and the duties are more intense. An administrative assistant usually works a front desk, answers phones, etc., for a LOT of people. The exec. asst. works usually for just one person. |

An executive secretary assists executive level, and administrative assistants assist any level employees. |
