Is there a legal length of time an employer has to discipline an employee?
The particular case in question---the manager at my office decided after 5 months she would go back and write all employees up for any tardies, sick days not approved, etc.

this site can answer all your employer/employee related questions. if you persue legal action, you have to file a complaint with eeoc before legal action can occur. good luck!!

I would think if they were going to discipline an employee, it would come to said worker within 30 working days. Most companies have an appeals/disciplinary policy. They have to follow certain steps, or they could be in trouble themselves. Ask for a copy of these guidelines, if you don't already have one. Then you'll know what they can do, the amount of time both of you have to file complaints, as well as the extent of what You can do.
If no policy is available, call the workforce commission in your area and go from there.

It really depends on the state law as well as federal. In "North Carolina it is a right to work state" . Meaning you don't have to join the union to get a job. In this state also an employer can fire you for any reason and at anytime (write ups included). To make matters worse If you are discriminated against (which falls under federal law) even if you have it caught on tape. Just to retain an attorney for a federal case you are talking 7000.00 walking out the door. That's because they charge triple to represent you for a federal case.
Lets make a long story short OK. Ask yourself this question. You employer is showing you that they can do whatever they want to you and get away with it because they know you are too chicken to leave (no offense). They know they have the upper hand and they are flaunting their arrogance! Before you settle into your career of a lifetime (if its possible) you will have gone through 30 or more jobs. IS YOUR DIGNITY AND SELF RESPECT WORTH THIS!
I had worse to happen to me. I had witnesses to back me up. Because I didn't have the 7000.00. I settled with them out of court and I vowed that I wouldn't put up with any employers abuse ever again!
Good luck and I hope I helped!

It depends on the state you live in and whether you are in a union or not to determine if it is "legal". It is certainly poor management. discipline, in order to be effective needs to be fair and TIMELY. She probably has a real problem employee on her hands, and discovered that she couldn't go after that one problem person unless she had been consistent with disciplining others for the same infractions.

The boss can do anything he/she wants. if there is a union, the boss can still do any thing he/she wants, [if it is legal,] the boss can still do anything he/she wants, as long as there is no loss of pay. there is no legal time length. did you forget the words you said when you got hired there. Can you be here every day and on time???? You are luck all you got was a written discipline. I would have fired you.

really????

Talk to an attorney. It could be her boss was coming down on her or she had a employee spoil the nest for the rest of you. Talk to her about her reasoning.
