Is there such a thing as a Glass Ceiling ?
Just started working in the US (from Finland) and keep hearing co-workers talk about a glass ceiling ? Where is it ? Do all company buildings have one ? Or is it a metaphor ?
Can someone please help?
A glass ceiling is a perceived restriction beyond which one cannot advance. It is my opinion that one should wear business attire but carry a working man's toolbox. (metaphorically speaking) What I am saying is, go for the job and do the best you can in the position you are able to climb to, but always keep your eyes open for a loose screw in the metaphorical glass ceiling, a piece of broken glass, or a place that you can get a wedge in.

if you're talking about an actual physical building, i'm sure there are some companies that have glass ceilings. but i also think it's a metaphor.

It's a metaphor for certain classes of people's inability to rise to the very top levels of an organization's structure. It is commonly applied to minority groups, women, gays, and older workers.

The "glass ceiling" is a metaphor. It usually means that you are not able to advance due to factors beyond your control.
