Quicken | Is this a scam? |
I was contacted by a company that presented the old "you will receive payment, keep X% of it and send us the rest" line. I passed it off as a scam, but did send in very limited information.
My name and address is all that i sent, nothing about any of my bank account information or anything like that. A few weeks passed, nothing really major happened, I did recieve an email telling me to contact someone informing them that I was a rep for this company, and I did (for a laugh mostly).
Then things got "real". I received, via UPS, what seems to be 7 very legitimate travelers cheque's totaling 3500 US dollars. I guess what i am asking is, is this still a scam? I've run through Visa's checks to tell if they are fake and they all pass as real, and I've even gone so far as to call Visa to further verifiy as much as possible. Any suggestions on what the scam might be? Or, am I the one person to finally find the one *real* internet get rich quick scheme? Additional Details Just giving an update... My friend and I took the cheques to the bank, told them our story, and they've passed them on to the FBI. Thanks for all the advice everyone! |

YES, this is absolutely a scam. Real companies don't need overseas representatives to collect payments for them.
The cheques are forgeries, no matter how real they look -- and they might even fool a bank teller. Take them, and all emails from the scammers, to the police immediately. If you try to deposit or cash them, you can get in serious financial and legal trouble. |

This has SCAM written all over it. The hook comes when you transfer money - either by check or wire transfer - and they obtain your banking information.
Traveler's cheques are not valid unless they are countersigned by the person who bought them, and in the presence of the person receiving the check. The person then treats it like a regular check by edorsing it on the back, and depositing it into his regula checking account.
RUN - VERY FAR - VERY FAST from this. |

If it seems too good to be real...it probably is. Many cons will use the use of money to bate the victim in to giving the con-artist personal information enough to drain the victim's accounts, usually a personal check or account number to wire funds from is what they will ask for. I would also question the use of Traveler's Checks, that right there tells me they are trying to use untraceable means, and your ability to actually cash them might not be possible. You can do what you think is the best for you, but the fact that you even have to question the legitimacy of this thing, tells me that your gut knows what is better for you. Honestly I would take it to an investigator or better yet an investigative authority and have it checked out...you might just uncover a huge scam. |

It is a SCAM. If the people mail you and ask where there money is just send them the Travler's checks, but my guess is you will NEVER hear from them again.
Or since you actually have the checks you could just turn them in to your local Police Department. I am sure they would love to try and catch these people before they take advantage of other people. They might even cash the checks into one of their accounts to see what happens. |
