Is this a scam? American Publishers?
So today at work, i got a call from a company who identified themselves as American Publishers, and they said they are sending me a $500 Shopping spree in the mail, along with like 6 magazines for 5 years. Now that sounds pretty damn good too be true. They said they were in Morristown, TN (that is also where the call originated from, i used reverse lookup on whitepages.com) and i looked up the company on the internet, and if it is them, they have been a member of the Better Business Bureau for a few months now. They said i got the stuff by being a preffered Mastercard holder, and they asked me to verify my debit card number, and me having a dumbass moment, decided to give it to them. My question is this a legit company? Because i already called the bank and they are hot carding my card so they can't use it. The number that called me was (423)586-2731. I just didn't know if anyone else has had this happen to them. I just don't want to report a good company to the BBB if this is a scam.

If they are giving you a 500 dollar shopping spree why would you give them access to your bank card? It's perfectly alright to report the company to the BBB. IF the BBB finds they are legitimate it won't affect the company what so ever.If they are a scam you have protected many from fraud. Just explain to the BBB that youre not sure if you have been scammed and you need them to confirm weather or not this is a good company. NO harm done on your behalf.

Yes, it's a scam. Why would they need your bank information if they are youing to send you something in the mail? Also, if it was really because you're a card holder, they would have your information already.

Companies never call people to solicit business. Only give your information to a trusted company that you called.

The scammers might be located in the same city as the business, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are affiliated with the business. They are just using a local business as a cover story.

I have heard of them, but I would report them just for being high pressure enough to ask your debit card number.

It isn't exactly a scam. Sometimes with these deals, you have to agree to take the mags for a period of time. The first year is free and the rest are at full price or more. You can't cancel until you complete the time you signed for. So you are stuck. The price is frequently more than you can buy them for off the rack. (Have seen people get stung for $1000 of dollars) General caution: If you have to sign anything, read it very carefully and don't be shy of saying NO!

By giving them your debit card number you may have already bought into them. Contact you bank immediately and refuse any payment to them because you merely verified your number and did not authorize payment of anything. You realize it was a stupid, dumba$$ thing to do and you apologize for any trouble you inadvertently caused.

Did you enter a contest? If not, it's probably a scam.

Just based on the fact that they asked for you to give out your card number screams scam, it would have been different if they asked for only the last four digits.

Also, the Better Business Bureau doesn't actually take action against the company. The most they do is contact the company, if it's a scam, the company likely won't respond to the contact, and then they list on their site that a customer has had problems with x-company, and that's it.
