Regal1 | Is this manipulation? |
1. Do managers have the right to seek control over their
employees?
2. Does anyone, for that matter, have the right to control
others?
3. Does control imply manipulation?
4. Is there anything wrong with managers manipulating
employees? |

depends on how you define "manipulation"
"management is what managers do", and management comprises planning, organizing, resourcing, leading or directing, and "controlling" an organization
and these planning, organizing, resourcing, leading or directing, and controlling will definitely mean manipulation.
and yes, they have the right to control you.
But again, that depends on how you define "control". |

A manager only has the rights over others in terms of enforcing company policies and rules within the workplace. These can range from behavior and etiquette, cell phone usage, language (as in terms of swearing and curse words), dress code, and division of work duties. How an employee looks and behaves is integral to the business' image, and he is primarily repsonsible for how well the business is run and operated. |

1. yes
2. yes, and the circumstances dictate the extent (like in a prison)
3. yes
4. no.
you need to distinguish Control from Manipulation.
Control can be just an "order" to do something
Manipulation is often taken as an underhanded, secretive and passive agressive attempt to gain from someone, that, which they had no formal right to.

A good manager must obtain control with out double standards.
Only in the place of work on the clock.
No , Not At all. It must be obtained threw respect.
Yes . It is unnecessary and cruel. Poor management and harassment. |

only control over them, in such that would be healthy. Not crossing personal boundries and so forth. Control is manipulation though. Like it or not, work sucks sometimes, but not to the point where a supervisor crosses certain boundries. Then its time for a A$$ whippin.. |

Managers are responsible for getting the end result. They control over all aspects. The employees do have rights and are cover under law. As long as the manager does not violate these laws there is nothing you can do about it except quit. |

The rules change inside the workforce unfortunately. |

A manager has no rights over his employees.
He pays them to do things.
They either accept this as part of the job or they go elsewhere for their employment. |

I would need more details. Control employees, manipulate employees -- for what purpose? If it's to get them to do their job and do it well, then yes. If it's to control every aspect of their work and personal lives, then no. |
