Is this morally wrong?
Boss basically told me I had to start wearing suits to be considered for a promotion--despite my years of experience, skills, tenure with the company, etc. I already dress business casual (GAP, Banana Republic), which is the dress code. I can't afford to buy suits, nor do I like wearing them.

I was really upset about this--it's like they're trying to take away part of my personality to make me one of their corporate drones.

Thoughts? Should I just 'give in' and drink the company Kool-Aid?
Additional Details
Also, they're just saying this to me. The company dress code of 'business casual' is not changing.

welcome to the world of getting ahead. i'd swallow your pride and dress accordingly. your paycheck will help you forget about the attire.

If you want to advance you are going to have to play the game. If you don't, there are many who will so there is no incentive for the corporate dopes to change.

Well, I am with you I do not agree... BUT that is how it goes apparently there management have a particular dress code, and if you want the position I guess your going to have too dress for it... Management have to keep a more professional look then the employees..

Morality has nothing to do with it. It boils down to how you see yourself ...or rather WHERE you see yourself.
Like it or not, leaders are different. They think, look and act different. By global standards the rank-in-file here in America have basically become slobs. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there is still more of a global look to leaders.
I have chickens, and birds of a feather really do flock together. If you want to rise to the top you may have to start looking the part first.

Sometimes for the position, different attire is required. I know it is annoying to have to wear a suit, but if you really would like to be promoted, I think you should suck it up! Not all suits are expensive, they actually have really nice cheap ones that I get online. Good Luck with your promotion!

John
Well, either you play along and get promoted or you don't wear suits and don't get promoted. I say give in, your career is important. It won't hurt you to wear a suit. I know you don't believe that what they are doing is right, and I agree, but they pull the strings.

metallica
do wat u have to do to get ur promotion,
u dont want to look back in a few years & think "if only"

It's not very nice but unfortunately that's office politics for you.

D.R cocksause
you should poision the koll-aid and let every other employe drink it.. so u will be the only one left for promotion

Individuality is a good trait to have but has its own limitations. The corporate world sets a standard for what it considers the formula for success...demeanor, attire and verbal skills (among others). If these are not met the company does not promote. Have a you ever seen a lawyer with a nose ring?
It all boils down to your particular long-term goals and your priorities. "Rolling over" may not be good for your own psyche.
I saw the results of when the "hippies" went their own way. In short, define your long-term goals and the needs of any children you may have, wouldn't you want them to live comfortably and enjoy a good education and a healthy body? That requires a measure of financial success, it doesn't have to be to the extreme though.

It's not morally wrong.

How much do you want a promotion? Most people have to wear a suit to work, maybe you've been lucky until now that you've had a more relaxed dress code.

Big Woof
I once worked for H&R Block. They required all men to wear neckties. I was very much against it but wore a clip-on. I was passed over for promotion several times. I went on to create my own businees with their customers and have done very well. Stand your ground. It is not moral.

Redcat23
It's all up to you on this one. Unless there is a "written dress code" at your place of work, you should keep wearing what is appropriate yet professional. Nobody can "force" you to do anything but think of it this way: Do you really want that promotion that bad?? Is it much better pay and is the job itself that much better?? If so, maybe consider speaking to your superior and find out what the chances are of getting that promotion and how long it would take to seal the deal. If you "are professional", it doesn't matter what you choose to wear as long as it's norm for that industry. MW
