Is this right for an employer to do?
I work in a factory and I had a job in the shipping department, the management made some changes to make the shipping department more efficient by re arranging the way the lines are set up, in this process they had to cut 3 of us out and put us in a different department which is a lower labor grade, meaning less pay, I will lose 50 cents an hour for going down a labor grade and plus a percentage of that grade which it comes out to like a dollar so a total of a 1.50 this is crap. anyone ever heard of a employer doing this kind of crap?

~~Yes tough times call for tough actions. The management has to do whatever it takes to keep the business solvent. I do believe a cut in pay that you can't afford will qualify you for unemployment benefits without a penalty period. However, it's a horrible economy and tough to get new jobs. You would need to weigh the pros and cons of looking for a new job. Drawing unemployment is a big cut in pay also and if you have health benefits you could lose those too. It may be better to tough it out and look for something higher paying while you are still working. Honestly, most people are thankful they aren't getting laid off if they have any cutbacks on the job. Sorry this happened to you though!~~

Yes, I have heard of it, it is called realignment. (sh) it happens.
Be thankful that you still have a job.

If you don't like the change, take your experience to another shipping department, or get in a truck.

Sure it is legal.

Most states are "at will" states. That means they can hire, fire, promote or demote anybody at any time for any reason except those reasons that specifically are discrimination against protect classes of people.

And sure, employers do it all the time.

In fact I think you are lucky and it was nice they moved you and kept you.

For the most part your job was eliminated and often with many companies they would have made you apply and compete for the other job and be rehired.
