Isn't UAW biting off the hand that feeds them?
It seems to me that a job with reduced wages is better than no job at all. The Senate gave the main reason for killing the GM and Chrysler loans was the inability to get lower wages from the unions. It would seem to me that it would be better to have a job making 80% of salary as opposed to unemployment payments. It seems to me that UAW need for the Big 3 to prosper not fail, but they seemed to have killed the deal in the Senate by refusing to lower wage demands in effect killing the companies that pay them.
Additional Details
To clarify, opponents of the bill in the Senate said that the one aspect that killed the deal for them was that UAW was not willing to make wage concessions. There are some exellent union workers, but their salaries are much higher than non union Toyota (and other makes) employees

I totally agree with you. Everybody knows the respective unions have bargained for wages that have bankrupted airlines and are bankrupting the Big 3 car companies. If I was the car czar and had total control, I would cut union salaries something like 20% and cut management salaries at least 20%, with caps starting at a million for the CEO, $250K for the next level below him, and gradually reducing downward from there. Then I would reassign the union workers to plants based on their willingness to accept the cuts. Then I would shut down those plants that are unprofitable because of their bloated payroll. Then the people with pay cuts can have jobs with a competitive employer and the stubborn fools who want the CEO and management to take pay cuts but won't accept one for themselves can sit at home and think about it.

After 9/11/2001, I lost my job. I has to take a $20,000 pay cut. I'm glad to be working. If I can do it, why can't they.

That has become the mentality of the UAW. They have killed the US car industry and are too stupid to even know it. I hope they get what they deserve, nothing. For years every time they want something, the car companies gave it to them, so I'm not just blaming the UAW, but the big 3 as well. I have always had American cars, but no more. I will look to Toyota, Nissan, etc from now on. I hope they have to file bankruptcy and the UAW gets pay cuts.

Confused ...
This is what UAW has planted, this will be what the UAW to harvest.

I think the problem lies, not with the workers, but with the top heavy company "brass"...the workers can only abide by it's union (which sometimes, shoots itself in the foot..), but the poor guy working his tail-off on the line, trying to feed his family..and then you have upper management...feeding off of..the line worker...
I don't think it was wage demands that killed the deal...

BTW- I live and work in NC..and have nothing to do with the automakers or a union....
Like everyone else..I'm struggling...but thankful to have a job...

why are we blaming everything on the unions and workers , look at the bigger picture , for the corporations its all about profit and cheap labor means more profits , and its a loan that the auto makers had asked for , not a Big Giveaway that the greedy banks got
