It's clear that Staples needs to hire more people...?
but why aren't they? the same handful of people work and the same "we're hiring" sign for 4-5 months but what are they doing with all the applications? one more thing, their version of customer service needs an overhaul. It stinks!

Are you looking for a job there, if so then apply and tell them how you would improve customer service and therefore make more money.

Otherwise go to Office Max, Office Depot, Quill. WB Mason.

I used to work for their competition and we were "always accepting applications." However, most of the applications I got were just horrible. Out of a stack of 100 applications, I would pick maybe 10 to interview. The rest either had no experience, extremely restricted availability, or wanted too much money. I also tossed applications with misspelled words and obvious grammatical errors. This may sound harsh but if I am hiring someone, that person will be representing my store to my customers. A lack of care in the application translates to a lack of care on my sales floor.

Every now and then, we would get a really good applicant. Even if I didn't have any open positions, I would hire that person rather than lose them and find a way to get them into my schedule.

Our payroll budget was set by the corporate office. They expected us to reach certain sales levels. The number of hours scheduled was directly tied to sales. If we were making our sales, we got more hours for the employees. If we were sucking, they slashed our payroll budget. Due to this type of budgeting, it was not uncommon for me to run a shift with myself, one sales associate, and one cashier. All hell would break loose when two of us were needed to get furniture or big items from the back. The cashier was not permitted to leave the register and if the other two of us were in back getting the item, that left absolutely no help on the floor for other customers.

You will find this type of scheduling everywhere now. My local 24 hour grocery store doesn't even schedule a single cashier before 7am or after 10pm. They make you do their work for them in the self serve lanes.

Shop elsewhere. There, that was easy.

It's a common tactic this day in age for business like that to keep a small amount of workers that they can exploit with over hour working and underpayment in order to make more money for the corporation. They are keeping all the applications they get, and they will call you if they feel that its time to fire a current worker for speaking up.

You should go to the website and express your concerns to the corporate office. The store manager may need a lesson in correctly running a national chain store.

maybe they arent makeing enough money to hire enough employees? have you ever thought about that? Do you know how much moeny is given to employees even if they are paid just 7 dollars an hour, lets calculate, if in 1 hour staples makes 300 dollars profit, and they have 7-8 employees they just lost about 20 percent of the profit they made. Hope this makes you understand that hireing a bunch of employees is not cheap! So think before you ask questions that you probbaly already know the answer to.
