Leaders and managers?
Can someone who is a leader not be a manager? Why or why not? Can someone who is a manager not be a leader? Why or why not?

someone who is a leader doesn't have to be a manager. it is possible to demonstrate leadership and initiative in any role within a company.

someone who is a manager could be a poor leader, but that would probably also make that person a poor manager.

Hi,

Jim Clemmer is a leadership guru with a bunch of books. He wrote an article called Management Vs. Leadership and it answers your question pretty neatly.

I would guess that most managers are NOT leaders because they usually just rise up the ranks over time. Companies often reward experience which only comes from just being in a company for a longer amount of time than either the losers who can't hold a job, or leader types who can't stand waiting to be promoted.

But there are leaders who become managers.....OF THEIR OWN COMPANIES! Or they get into fields where leadership doesn't involve managing. On the other hand, leadership in itself often requires one to manage others from time to time.

A Leader can be someone you work side by side with, that has the same job you do, but is a person who slides easily into the leadership role, without becoming a suit.
A Manager could be a leader, and certainly people may look up to them. However, it has been my experience that some managers are terrific managers, but are not seen as a leader. Leaders are accessable. Managers delegate to leads which allows the manager to focus on the bigger picture, where as the lead is right in the thick of it, guiding the team toward the goals set by managment.

I don't know
In my last job, the managers had no leadership qualities at all. They would just 'pull rank' if anybody appeared to be more intelligent than them (which happened every day). That was in a call centre, a job notorious for line managers having no people skills. And any lowly advisor who had leadership skills aroused jealousy and suspicion among those managers. They wanted to protect their own easy job and keep advisors in their place.

Anyone can be a manager, or a boss. Simply telling people what to do (without regard for result) isn't terribly hard. My 2-year old can scream for her favorite toy, and chances are I'll go and find it for her.
Leaders are a lot different. They'll convince, rather than just order. They'll inspire others, they'll mentor, and they'll teach, rather than instruct. Leaders are far more rare.
And they don't have to have formal authority - in many ways, my secretary was a much better leader than our sales manager.
While our sales manager would mainly look for ways to get people in trouble, my secretary was an inspiration to everyone she worked with - people flocked to her, relied on her, liked her - while the sales manager (grumpy old witch that she was) would generally clear a room when she walked in - and how effective can you be if everyone avoids you?
Bosses/managers are generally concerned with themselves, and maybe with their own supervisors. Leaders are concerned mainly with the quality of their own work and the good of the whole firm. Leaders are missed - bosses are not, generally.
Ideally, one could be both, and ideally, leaders would be selected as managers, bosses, etc. But there's always politics, nepotism, fakery, backstabbing - all the hallmarks of a manager who is unable to lead, and must instead follow after, harranguing and ordering and alienating the people they need most!!
