Is it legal for Walmart to check my bag of purchases after I have paid for the items and they have given me a reciept? It seems to me that I own the merchandise and they have no right to search my bag unless they expect or have cause to think I may have stolen something. They randomly check bags this way at our local Walmart and it makes you feel like a thief.. very humilating!!! I feel they are violating my rights... Could this possibly be a class action suit againt them for every one who has been humilated by this practice of randomly checking customers?? Its my property ...not theirs after they give me a bill of sale or receipt for it!!!! I tend to think that they are on thin ice ...on this practice. |

That is a very good point.
You may be on their property at the time, but as an invitee.
You've completed a contract (sale/receipt etc)
Your humiliation? Simply implying that someone is a thief in this matter (and then discovering it is baseless) could be considered false imprisonment.
My advice would be to seek a lawyer, and definitely post how you make out! |

I think it is legal for them to do that due to the high high amount of shoplifting that goes on at wal marts.....I know what you mean though, it does make you feel like they think low of you, etc. They are just doing their job though, like anyone else. |

they are alowed to check packages while you are on the premises. that includes the parkinglot.

humiliation is in the eye of the beholder.
In reality, this is just Loss Prevention by the company. In reality, most of the Loss experienced by firms like this is from Employees themselves (no kidding)
If you dont like being treated like Cattle.....stop acting like one.
My pet Peeve is that the US economy has forced us to shop in placed like this just to make ends meet. if you could choose to shop in stores that treat you like customers instead of potential losses....you would.
So I dont go to Walmart, Kmart or any place else that treats me like a source of greenbacks. |

I KNOW THAT THIS IS A VERY ANNOYING PRACTICE. COMPANIES REALLY DO NOT LIKE TO DO THIS EITHER. I BELIEVE THOUGH THEY DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO THIS UNDER THE LAW. HAVING SAID THIS THE COMPANY SHOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO MINIMIZE THIS PRACTICE THROUGH BETTER SECURITY OBSERVATION AND PRACTICES. I KNOW HAVING WORKED QUITE A BIT OF RETAIL IN MY LIFE WHEN I WAS IN THE CAPACITY AS A DECISION MAKER I WAS ALWAYS VERY SENSITIVE TO THIS ISSUE. I DID EVERY THING I COULD THINK OF TO AVOID HAVING TO DO THIS. SOMETIMES IT JUST COULD NOT BE HELPED. IN MY CASE THIS WAS EXTREMELY RARE. MAKING A MISTAKE ON MY PART WAS EVEN RARER. Another reason not to shop at Walmart.
What I might do? If they want to check my bag...I let them and then tell them that I am going directly to customer service and returning all the items because I do not like to be treated as if I were a thief. Then turn around and march up to customer service, return the goods, get my money back, ask to see the store manager, and tell him what I think of their random searches.
At Costco, everyone shows their receipt and the checker does a cursory visual check of your basket, same at Frys. You know that everyone is treated the same so it is not a problem or question of your character. |

I definitely don't think it's illegal.. they do it at a few other stores.. i've had it done at walmart, bestbuy, costco... its just a way of making sure you payed for what you are taking out of the store.. but at the stores i've gone to it's not random they do it to everyone so it doesn't humiliate me.. but if they just did it to me then i'd be upset |

yes, this is ILLEGAL, walmart can not touch you even say if you did steal, they have no right to look into your bag without your explicit permission, you can sue if you want but better get proof... You can get up to $25k for this action. |
