Lots of talk lately about a recession. Just what is it and how does it affect the economy?

You know how your earning power isn't what it was a few years ago (in that the money you make simply isn't taking you far)? You know how gas is so expensive that you are consolidating trips, or walking. Or how two gallons of milk is your first hour's pay?

Recession. It slows everything down. People can't make their bills. There are a lot of foreclosures (in this recession, those will come first) and people begin losing jobs. If we're lucky, it'll stop there.

That's why so few people are really buying this Christmas.

By definition a recession is a general slow down in economic activity. It may or may not affect you directly or have a large impact on your life or livelihood.

It is part of normal economic cycles.

OK... a recession is bad..but not as bad as a depression. It is an overall decline in our gross domestic product, all final sales, imports, exports etc. It is normal though. I am an economics major and I believe that it was expected because we have been in such a boom and spending like crazy and recession will lower spending and cut things back. It will become a time to save money and not spend as much. The big problem though for many american is we are in such debt it will become hard to save because we are so deep in financial debt. Its bad but could be worse but dont worry too much we have financial experts to aid in solving problems by adjusting many aspects of the economy

A recession is two or more consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.

The fact that one is in a recesssion or not does not effect the economy as much as it is the economy.

It often means fewer orders for products and services, therefore layoffs.
