Well this is your lucky day, this same thing happened to me yesterday!! and so on the way to work this morning i called the post office (they get a bad rap but they were so nice) and they told me that the letter would be mailed on to the recipient who would be charged the 42 cents. you can call ahead and give them a heads up if it is a person or if it is a company (like in my case) i would expect that this happens allot (we both just did it) and that they will accept the charge.
For me it was a student loan payment and I'm going to wait and see if the payment is processed within the week.
But the letter is going to get there.

It might be delivered "postage due" to the person you sent it to. Outside of that, dead letter office. Not sure what happens to them after they go there, though.

Don't listen to these other guessers. The receiver will be billed for it with a little note in their mail box telling them to pick it up at the post office. Even if it's for 1 cent.

If you put it it your mailbox without postage, the mailman wont take the letter.
If you put in in a drop mailbox like in town, you should look for a phone number on the box. You may be able to call and have them get it out before the mail is picked up.
If the mail has already been picked up you should call the post office and ask them what to do. They should be able to help you.

The post man will require your addressee to pay for it or send it back to you.
