Managerial Accounting Ethic question?
If you are trying to increase profits be advertising a ton more, but you include this expense as a product cost,

how does this increase profits?

Is this ethical to do this?

I will select a best answer
Additional Details
This question is supposed to be a hypothetical thing. I guess im not making my self clear. I know that advertising doesnt increase profit, but when you expense advertising as a product cost rather than expensing it as a selling/administrative cost why does this show higher profits?

i dont think anyone includs advertising as product cost..still if someone does...its wrong because it is something to increase sales and to make early profits..not dat it is increasing the product efficiency...i think this is a indirect cost...and not a product cost

You would be decreasing profits since the profit is the price you sell minus the price you paid for the goods. By adding the ad costs to the price, you made less profit.
But any accounting chicanery is not ethical because it hides the truth; so it is not ethical..

This is very obvious. Advertising brings more revenue to your company by showing the public that your product exists and that it is better than the competitor. The money that is required to advertise should be used as a business expense from your overall revenue. Product cost is involved with only the requirements of the creation of your product which is in a different tax bracket. It increases the profits because you are spending money that is less taxable and you don't have to include advertisement as deduction towards total revenue. It is unethical because you are using a loophole to generate more profits.

No, its not related to the cost of goods. It will increase sales, but not really increase your bottom line. You can spend lots of money on advertising but if does not pan out then it was just a wasted expense. This is not an ethics question. Companies advertise everyday to increase sales. You have to lower your cost of goods to make more money, or sell your items at a higher price. You can not include it as a product cost, any CPA will see right through it.

Valuation Expert
Advertising in itself doesnt increase profits. The business generated from the advertising increase profits. In order to attribute your advertising to product cost you would have to allocate evenly or weighted depending on your increased business and how you would measure it against the advertising.

It would be much easier to deduct it as advertising without all the extra math. There is a risk of error in your allocation method that could be good and/or bad for you. If the estimates are under stated then your aren't getting enough back and if you over state then you may be at risk of some kind of tax fraud if deemed unreasonable or intentional.

You shouldn't have to worry about anything unethical if you apply the tax credits per IRS requirements and are not basing your tax payments on a calculation or estimate that is overly stated.
