Okay, our McDonlads resturant in peterlee is going 24 hours! From friday-sunday! and we expected to work for just...50p extra an hour from 12am-6am!! anyone else agree this is shocking! So how can we make the managment pay us more for these i.e maybies double time or time and a half! Who or what shall i go to..we dont have a union! Am thinking the local paper any idears? thanks!

I am sorry - but you don't have to work at McDonalds. The term "mcjob" exists because its entered modern slang as pretty much the bottom of the pile in terms of places to work:

As such I don't think you will get much interest from your local paper that you get rubbish pay for working nights...
That said, are they forcing you to work nights? You should sill be bound by the terms of your original contract - and you have to agree in order for them to change it. So you shoulnd't personally be too affected?
If you want to work nights, but don't think they pay is right, then you cannot force them to pay more. As long as they are ahdereing to minum wage regulations, then they can pay whatever they like. If it is so "shocking" that they can't get staff, they will soon have to up it. This is the joy of a free market economy...
My advice would be to get another job if you really don't like it. |

Sorry you dont get time and half for night shift work. Most place only pay a small amount for that shift.
Change your availability - so they can only put you on days or evening. |

Right, so you're going to take on a multinational corporation on your own, are you...???? Mac Donalds employs so many people and their pay scale is already entirely established across the whole of the UK... so because a few youths in Peterlee kick off, they're unlikely to change their entire pay structure, and they certainly ain;t gonna give you more and not anyone else. Forget it. If you don't like it then, I'm afraid, quit. |

It is your legal right (UK) to be in a union is you want to be. Best way is to join a union (and try to get other workers to do so), then tell your bosses after the event.
If they try to sack you for joining a union, they are behaving illegally, and your union should back you up. |
