Only good silk ties should be worn. Its hard to find a good one for under $50.00. Most are $80 or more. The only thing worse than a cheap tie is a cheap suit or jacket to go with it.

Depends on the mood and the occasion.
In business/work setting - Fabrics and Patterns with basic colors work. Never go conservative though, you don't stand out.
When I'm at something a little more fun. Brighter colors prevail...I usually go with pastel on pastel (Shirt on Tie) combination. It gives a relaxing feel.
My philosophy is to never wear a funny or theme tie. Cause usually the 'theme' is 'Things That Make You Look Like a Jerk"
