John TS | My Boss/Manager is Lazy? |
I work alongside my boss, doing pretty much the same work as she does. The problem is that I have slowly ended up doing everything, including all her jobs. We get on well, but it seems as if, the more I do the less she does. Its got to the point now that i'm running the business whilst my boss messes about all day browsing the internet and doing virtually nothing.
If my boss was to actually do some work, we could achieve so much more. I don't really mind about my increased work load, but resent the fact that my boss is taking all the credit and is getting paid alot more than me.
I don't want to involve the company directors, as they get on well with both me and my boss. A good friend of mine told me not to rock the boat and keep my mouth shut.
What should I do? Please help. |

Keep a log of your hours and keep a log of the activities you do on a daily basis. Populate this log daily, religiously, keep the log in a highly visible area "so your boss sees it" and anyone else that wants to.
When people notice and ask you about it you can respond by simply saying something to this effect.
"By tracking my tasks, and the time I spend, I am monitoring my time management skills and my effectiveness of completing assignments so that I can improve my output."
This makes you an effective employee genuinely concerned over monitoring and improving your output. As continually improving should "always" be a priority and no one should take exception to what you are doing. And yes you even have a spin off from this game and may truly improve your efficiency.
Your boss may take the hint, this may accomplish a few things.
1) As a comparison to what she does someone may notice the discrepancy. (Such as her boss)
2) It would be difficult for her to take credit for your work as it is broad-casted.
3) She may feel compelled to prepare a similar list or at least start to realize how ineffective she is.
In the event she is the owner and the boss she will only realize that you are an effective and valuable employee, and this may benefit you as well.
If you are still angered by the situation, remember that you always have three choices. "Change it" "Conform to it" or "Get out of it"

Keep doing what you're doing. One of two things will happen. Likely this will be noticed by the directors, as livinfree has said, in which case you may soon have your boss's job. If that doesn't happen, you are presumably gaining valuable experience that will help you to get a better job elsewhere. |

Your in a sticky situation for sure. The reality is that this will soon be noticed. When work is due make sure you deliver what you have done. If you have questions about what you are doing, email the questions to these directors. If you are doing the work of your boss/manager then begin being a manager.
People who say "don't rock the boat" are typically the same people who are too afraid to leave the shore.

Why keep your mouth shut and not rock the boat?
This woman is only your boss, she's not a relation or anything. You need to make your feelings clear either to her or the directors. Ask for a pay review as you have a very good reason (i.e. taking on more work).
She is effectively walking all over you because of her position. Just think when she gets home she probably has a good laugh about it!
Ok, you may get on really well, but this is a dog eat dog world and you don't go to work for the fun of it. It's all about money at the end of day and you should get what you deserve and so should she. |
