My boss is pressuring us to give to charity on behalf of our company?
My boss came in this morning and said our office is at the bottom of the list for "contributions" to a certain non-profit organization so he wants us to donate $5 from every paycheck to make our numbers better. I told him no, that I don't want tod, and that I donate clothing, canned food, $1 at petsmart, etc. but I don't give money to random organizations and he threw a fit about it! Now he has been a jerk to me all day and bottom line is that all he cares about is making his numbers better NOT helping people. Anyways, he knows I make like $10 an hour and live on my own...my account is in the cents or negative by the time payday comes so honestly I can't afford to feed other people before myself. Anyways, I don't think it's any of his business if I choose to give and if I do decide to it'll be on my own behalf and to an organization I know well and care about.

Next time he says something about it what should I say to get my point across without sounding like a greedy b*tch?

I'd also like to add I graduated a few months ago and am about to start paying back loans and my leased car is almost up so I have alot of expenses right now I need to save every last $5 for! I'll give old clothing and things like that but I really can't afford this.

Well you're not even near greedy, don't think that of yourself.

He doesn't have a sense of humor I bet, but next time politely offer, "I can reconsider after my next raise." You don't owe him an explanation, he's supposed to be gracious, make his pitch and back off, that's mature, not to mention professional.

Your boss is a putz, bummer.

You're boss sounds like a jerk... he's paying you $10 buck an hour... he should be donating to your refrigerator! Tell him this:

Ya know, I would love to help your cause, but I'm supporting my cause right now...I've got an electric bill that's past due, my home phone is disconnected, my cell phone will probably be next, my rent is due, my car is breaking down and I can't afford to get it fixed, I can't get an appointment with my doctor until next month cause the free clinic is backed up ( I can't afford health insurance) so... yea, I'd love to help, but... can I contribute to your cause in the next couple of months?

He will definitely get the message and never ask you for contributions again!

I would say "I'm sorry, but I can't afford it."

Well at least you company is on the list, some companies don't give to some Charities for this exact reason -you don't have it to give this year. I noticed in your statement that you say that your boss want you to give $5 from each paycheck if you get paid weekly that means he is asking for $20 each month or if your paid bi-weekly that is still $10 each month. I suggest that you let your boss know that you already give to a particular organization, He will not have anything to say to that. What your doing if you tell him that, is your letting him know that you already have an organization that you are donating to, so he will not keep asking you.

Simply tell him no. You don't owe him any kind of explanation or reason. But if you want something else to say, then ask him to give you some of his money so that you can give to the charity. If he really wants to make himself look good, he won't mind giving you a few bucks. If he is begging you, then there is no reason why you can't beg him either.

boomba
It's not really charity if it is forced. Just tell him the truth "I can't afford it I'm barely making ends meet as it is"

In the days Charles Dickens, when we donated to a charity we at least knew that all the money went direct to the beneficiary. Unfortunately todays so-called charities are in fact no more than buisnesses. These past few weeks I have been sat at my computer checking up on the money these people take, for example. I asked the NSPCC WHAT % of all donations go to the beneficiaries intended. I was told that 83% of the money goes to the BUISNESS and 17% to the beneficiaries. Children in Need took 50,000000 last year, As far that I understood, this money was ment to help children. However, Last year this charity gave over £12000 to an incarerated criminal. the reason they gave this money to this criminal is because the criminal is a woman. They also paid the court costs of a Muslim schoolgirl that came to this country with her parents of her own free will, because she wanted her so-called human rights in wearing a tent over her head. I am happy that the girl lost her case however I wonder how much Cheri Blair woman who was first in line with the human rights brigade got for her services. My wife and I used to pay 5% of our hard earned pay to these charities however, we would rather buy animal food per quarter and take it to the animal shelter. this way we know that greedy chief executives can't touch a penny. Other than that, we do not donate to these people. This is of course a great shame because thanks to theses greedy people, the genuine loose out.
