My boss recently told me that she was more concerned with revenue this month than profit...why?
I had a meeting with my boss not so long ago, and she told me that it was more important that we generate revenue this month, even if it meant that we'd run at a loss in regards to profit. I've been stewing on it for a little bit, and couldn't really think of a good reason why that would make sense. Why would it be important to generate revenue even at the cost of negative profit?

Because if the company did not generate revenue, it would be operating at a loss. It would be spending more money than it's making. Profit comes from revenue, so you need to worry about whether you are even generating revenue before you can start to think about your profits.

Because you have to first bring in money (revenue) to make money, deduct expenses, then you have profit. No revenue means definitely no profit. You can cut expenses where needed to bring profit up.

For example, the business owns a more inventory than it wants to own and foresees a decline in the value thereof, it will want to clear excess inventory (even at a loss).

Or,

The business is using a receivables line of credit where the amount of credit is proportional to the value of the inventory, then the company may want to boost/maintain revenues rather than be forced to use cash to retire short term debt.

Or,

The company is very sensitive about maintaining market share.

On a more personal level it might be due to her compensation plan If her bonus is dependent on revenue rather than profit it is in her best interest to have more revenue and let the profits be damned.

I was once sitting in the office of a VP of Sales when he got a phone call. It was a sales manager saying the only way he could book a 15 million dollar sale by the end of the month was to give an extra 5% discount. No discount no sale until the middle of the next month. The VP okayed the deal because it meant a big bonus for him.

Revenue is the income of a government from taxation, excise duties, customs, or other sources, appropriated to the payment of the public expenses. In other words profits are only for the moment, where as revenues are consistent and also long term.
