My current employer asked everyone in our office for an updated resume, any idea why?
I've been with this company for 5 years, why would they need a resume?

It sounds ominuous to me. I have been working for more years than I want to count, even for companies that became deregulated and bought out, and I've never been asked for a new one nor have I ever heard of that. I think your company is about to go through a change of some sort - what that may be you will find out. But one thing is for sure! You need to do your resume up nice. Make it neat, spell check it, and make sure is is complete. Include in it what you have been doing the last 5 years, and don't forget to add any other talents you have, interests you have, etc. Also make copies of it just in case. If worse comes to worse and you need a new job at least you'll have it ready to go. Good luck!

A new resume would show them any education they may of continued with since being hired. This would be good to know for raises, promotions, and choosing who to let go. It might even be helpful for letting go of an employee that they think overstated their skills on their first resume.

They apparently have not kept very good records so far. They could need them for salary review, they may be considering lay-offs or restructuring, they may be selling the company, they may just have a consultant to help them increase business revenue.

I would not worry about it though; I doubt if you are going to be losing your job.

Maybe they are going to sell the business?

My company did it once before promotions and salary reviews. Upper management wanted to make sure that everyone was being treated fairly in relation to co-workers. Often they aren't sure exactly what people do and what they have done in the past.
