My main food shop is Tesco what is yours?
Do you buy ethically traded items, or would you if you coud afford the luxury?

snetterton
I wouldn't shop at Tesco's if it was the last store on earth.

They are exploitative of everyone from farmers to shoppers, they use their massive power to override planning laws and the quality of their stuff is, frankly, pants.

Waitrose for me - it's a partnership and doesn't have shareholders to satisfy at the expense of ethics.

I buy fairtrade coffee and bananas, although it seems I might have to stop the latter as Pratts appear to be as bad as any full-on capitalist outfit.

Its a balance between Tesco and Sainsburys. I dont like to shop at Tesco because i think they are ruining small businesses and its not very ethical trading no matter how much they try too look good! My uncle has his own business and tries to supply his products to Tesco, he says they are very very arrogant, and DEMAND extremely low prices for the good, i mean the price at which they are willing to buy the goods of my uncle is sooo low that it actually costs my uncle more just to manufacture the goods! And they will not even bargain or come to an agreement, its either agree, or they will go to your competitors. Its ruining small businesses as they cant afford to match the low prices. At least Sainsburys are not that arrogant! So i try to stick with Sainburys, only go Tesco for the odd bits and bob! And as for the Ethically traded items, i try to when ever i can, but if i do find something amazingly better then i would buy that instead!

I shop at LIDL because it's what I can afford. I'd like to be budgetted for "organic" and "ethical" but we're poor.

I use the local street market and local butchers and local off licence, hate supermarkets and only use them in an emergency, do try to buy fairly traded products but sometimes they are a little to expensive.....

I shop at Waitrose because they have more continental foods, fairtrade & have a wide selection of organic produce, they also support local farmers & traders.

AngeleyesOddette...
I shop in between supermarkets and my local baker and butchers.

asda. close to my work and i get cheaper petrol and an annual money-back voucher by using my asda credit card.

i buy on price, sainsburys are nearer to where i live, but they are toooooo expensive.

my budget doesn't cover me for ethically traded - or organic - goods, but i would like to help if i could.

?
my main weekly shop is at Asda. they have great bulk buy deals as well as named brands.
although for a treat, every now and then, i have a blow out at waitrose.
i spend about £60 more than normal but their stuff is fab and indulgent.

I shop at Morrisons,I'm the buy one get one free queen! If it's on offer it's in my trolley! I would buy organic if it was cheaper but I do go to the local farmers market when it's on.
After watching the whistleblower TV show this week I would never shop at Tesco or Sainsburys fish, meat or deli counters again!

Until two weeks ago I did all my shopping at Tesco, purely out of convenience. When you work full time and hate grocery shopping like I do it's easiest to get it all in one hit. However I've been feeling bad about it for some time, hearing about all the small businesses that are closing down because they can't compete with the supermarkets. So after scoping out what is available to me in my area I've decided on a compromise.

I buy my meat, fish, fruit, veg and eggs from local traders at a weekly market, and dry cat food from the local pet shop. The rest of the stuff like bread, loo roll, cleaning products, toiletries, wet food for the cat and milk I get from Tesco. Ideally I would like to get the lot from local shops, but I simply couldn't afford it on my present wage. Also there are other factors: the pet shop has actually STOPPED selling wet food beacuse he can't compete with the supermarkets on price. I would like to buy more eithcal items like fair trade but money is a factor. So I will do my bit with the local traders because I can do all that in my lunch hour and I feel like I'm doing something for the community. I would recommend that everyone does this anyway, as the produce is hardly any difference in price but the quality is vastly improved. There are also books available on this subject, there's one called 'Shopped' which is about the power of supermarkets. I haven't read it but I know people who have and they say they'll never shop at Tesco again. Sorry this is long but it's something I feel strongly about.
