sweetnfoxychick | Need advice on what to do now regarding potential financial fraud in the workplace.? |
I came upon some knowledge, which I don't think it matters how, and found proof that seems to indicate my counterpart at work was siphoning funds from the company. She is the favorite. I talked w/ my supervisor who yelled at me, accused me of trying to find too much work, said he has worked hard to be nice to me, and basically said I had no right to worry about the situation. At one point my counterpart was the only person overseeing financial transactions in my department. It was by chance I found out and try to keep cool with everyone and admit I try to keep busy on the company dime. I am a sensitive person but he hurt my feelings making me feel bad because I exposed potential fraud. I know I did the right thing and I contacted his supervisor considering his response was "If it happens again then tell me." His supervisor won't be in until Monday so I won't hear from her until then, but how do I deal with him and what do you suggest I do if he brings it up when we're alone? Additional Details He is difficult to work with to begin with so that is nothing new and has a superiority complex. The way she allegedly committed the fraud was slick and wouldn't have been found out except for the one thing i found which would've been gone and forgotten if I hadn't seen it when I had. I know if I didn't speak up I'd be looked at. I'm just at a loss because I don't know why he dislikes me so much in the first place I don't really talk at all at work just do my job and go home because he does make me feel uncomfortable. I also have requested a transfer. I just think personal blows are really low and I need some advice I'm young and this is a new experience for me. So far I've done the right thing, now I want to make sure it stays that way. P.S. This is healthcare. |

Most fraud is committed when there is only one person who always handles the books. Take it higher up and if they fire you or make things hard, you have grounds for a lawsuit. |

If there is a real problem, let upper management know. Isn't there a whistleblower hotline. Internal Audit? |

You are ethically and morally obligated to take action by reporting this. Does your company have hotline? You should not feel bad about this at all. Your company should be glad that they have someone like you. Sometimes, with fraud like this, there may be more than one person involved. Perhaps the supervisors are being less than helpful because they are in on it too. Be sure to tell someone quickly before they work out a scheme to backstab you. |

Your might try speaking with the HR manager. He/she can investigate or refer it to upper management. That can take some of the heat off you. It might also jumpstart an investigation because a member of management will be rasing the issue. I've found a good HR manager to be very helpful in sensitive matters. |

Looks like there is a chance that your supervisor is in collusion with your counterpart and maybe his supervisor is also aware. Since your company does not have an anonymous hotline, it is probably not a publicly listed company (which is required to do so). It gives me the impression that the rot may be spread too far than you may know. Tread carefully - you have not given details of the fraud. Sometimes fraud is committed by regular employees but on the directions of very senior people.
If you sense a deeper rotting in the entity, suggest getting a job elsewhere. |
