Need help from experianced ebay buyers/sellers?
Okay I won an auction for a pair of jeans on ebay for 10 bucks. The shipping is 15 dollars which is outrageous. Although i've already won the bid I still haven't paid yet. 15 dollars for shipping is much higher than similar jeans which range from about 6-8 dollars. Is this person ripping me off? Do I have to pay?

too late, but you never bid on something unless you know the whole story, shipping is one of them. if they don't list the shipping, contact the seller and ask. never hesitate to ask. some buyers will add their time and materials to a shipping cost and that will make it higher. what i would do, is message the seller. ask them if there might be a cheaper way to ship the jeans to you and that will open things up to find out why it is so expensive. i sold a group of items and the buyer wanted to know why shipping was so high. i not being very experienced did not realize there was a cheaper way to ship so the buyer helped me and themselves at the same time.

The shipping price is usually quoted on the listing so this shouldn't be a surprise and I would say yes you have to pay as you entered in a contract and agreed to purchase the item.

jillybird
You win, you pay. The postage is clearly stated so you know before you bid.

Do you have to pay? That is tough. If you choose not to there is a good chance that ebay will ban you, that is part of the agreement you had to agree to in order to get on the site to bid. Also, it is your responsibility to check things like shipping costs before you make a bid. It is really up to you but bids on ebay should be considered a binding contract.

If you commited to buy then yes you have to pay. all of that information should have been stated in their listing. it should have been reviewed prior to you bidding on the item. You do have the option of not paying but the seller can leave negative feedback against you and report you to Ebay.

It probably does cost $15 to ship jeans. Have you ever shipped anything? Contact the seller, but they usually put the shipping price right in the auction info.

linda
You bid, you won, you must pay..
You should have read all shipping and methods of payment information before bidding.
Sorry
Good luck

If you bought it you have to pay. Sure, $15 is way to much for shipping, but thats why youve got to look at what the costs are before you buy. If he didnt state the shipping cost, then you shouldnt have bought from him.

No, this person is not ripping you off. You should have looked into the costs involved before purchasing the item.

Basically, the way I have always understood ebay, because you submitted a bid and won the auction then yes I'm pretty sure you have to pay . You probably should have asked the seller if there was any room for negotiation on the price before you put in your bid.
To answer your other question, $15 for a pair of jeans definitely seem too high. My advice would be from here on, if you have any questions about something you want to buy,ask the seller before you bid. They might be willing to make an adjustment. In fact it might not hurt to go ahead and still ask the seller if they would reduce the shipping anyway, it never hurts to ask. Hope this helps.

Shipping prices can be larger if you are at a far location from the seller. I honestly can't tell if he's ripping you off. Just contact the seller about it and I'm sure there will be no problem. & yes, you have to pay if you want the jeans.

mageta8
You should have read the shipping price before you ok'd your bid. How are they mailing it? Overnight, Post Office, UPS, Fed Ex...you gotta think of that also...shipping stuff can be pricey. Even if they are ripping you off...you agreed to pay this amount when you placed your bid.

Toffy
Yes on both counts. Many ebay sellers make up the amount charged in shipping fees. Gouging is done all the time. You only have one slight chance to get out of this and that is to email the seller and ask for a cancellation of the auction, on your part. If you dont get a good reply back then thank them for the consideration and pay up immediately and learn this lesson. Always check the postage rates first before you bid, email if necessary to find out the postage if they dont have the postage meter on the site. Lesson learned is never forgotten. If I was the seller I would cancel the auction, and relist. Many will not.....and be careful of the FEEDBACK...no one wants a negative feedback.

Brewster
15 dollars does seem a bit steep. Was this mentioned on the original auction listing ? If so, there isn't much you can do to dispute it. I would recommend emailing the buyer and negociating, however if they insist on you paying the 15 dollars, then the best you can do is put it down to experience.

Yes you should pay up. Your account will get stopped and a complaint lodged against you otherwise. However you should check the postage next time.
You could ask for the postage to be reduced as a sign of goodwill as you belive it to be too high.

They can only say no!

Didn't you know what shipping would be when you bid on it.
Contact the seller and see if they will reduce it for you.
Many sellers will jack up the shipping costs so they can offer a lower opening bid. When you bid you have to take shipping into consideration.
If you don't pay the seller will file a complaint with Ebay against you. You may be able to convince them to "settle" this as both parties agree to not finish the deal and they should be able to get their listing fee and final value fee back from Ebay.

sarapricex3
Yes, you have to pay. If not, then you can get in trouble with Ebay... it's in the fine print.

Shipping costs have raised recently, and when I list a pair of jeans on there, the minimum I put for shipping is $7. Usually it's about $10. This covers the packaging (usually a box), delivery confirmation, and insurance in case something happens.

Some people do try to earn a little extra money by raising the shipping fees, but that's something you should've looked at before you bid on the item. Do you really want the jeans bad enough? Paying $25 for a pair of jeans is a great price to me... and now you know to pay attention more and ask questions before bidding on a future item.

And I'm sorry to sound rude or harsh, but I sell things on Ebay quite a bit, and no offense, but I get annoyed when people complain about shipping after they've already won an item. If shipping costs aren't listend when you bid on an item, then ask the seller how much it will cost BEFORE you bid... it's not rocket science.

Yes, they are ripping you off (unless it's express shipping, which I doubt it is). Problem is...you were supposed to check the auction over carefully....making sure shipping was reasonable and making sure you could comply with the sellers instructions. Ebay won't let you back out unless you come up with a legit reason the seller is being unfair. Look under their guidelines. See if there is a policy for gouging on shipping b/c I'm pretty sure there is....just contact ebay about the shipping problem and they'll help you work things out with the seller. Good luck

Ronnie j
No, you do not have to pay, but you will receive bad feedback, and may have to pay the sellers fees.
If the seller did not mention shipping in the auction, and only quoted shipping after the auction ended, then you can contest the shipping. Contact Ebay and report excessive shipping charges.

yes you do buy bidding you are agreeing to buy, always check postage before bidding as this is how they get a huge price for thing by upping the postage costs, fair, no but they do it, if you dont pay you will be suspended from ebay,

MikeD2
You entered an agreement, so yes, you have to pay.
You may be being ripped off, but that is how some sellers make their money - shipping.
Ebay is a mugs game, and you are just a "Mug Punter" to some.
Learn your lesson, and don't get conned again.

Jordan
It sounds like he's ripping you off. He's probably pocketing the shipping money that's left over. If you don't pay, it'll end up with you most likely getting bad feedback and your account may be suspended or removed.

i would say their ripping you off. but they have to pay to sell stuff on ebay. you might try contacting them with your problem.

lahockeyg
$15 is outrageous for shipping on a pair of jeans and YES...they are ripping you off. Unfortunately you won the item and agreed to pay the cost of the jeans plus the shipping so there is nothing you can do. Just be more careful next time you purchase something and don't buy something that costs so much to ship. I see sellers do this all the time. They will list the item at .99 cents and the shipping is REALLY high...I think they do this to cover the real cost of the jeans...so its not really a great deal for you but for them its a windfall.

dude d
buying clothes in ebay is worthless. Instead go to the department store. By the way, we are in Christmas season I assume you can find good bargain.

write to ebay/paypal about this. because i know there's a certain policy about shipping and handling fees for sellers and they can't overly rate the fees. their account can be terminated.
