The media is helping to stoke the run on NR by speculating and inflamed reporting by using words like 'crisis', 'belly up', etc., and urging people who are panicking to speak about their fears. It's like broadcasting the screams of frightened people over the PA when there's a fire. Any attempts by the management ot tell people to keep calm in that situation will be drowned out. SKY is especially lurid and culpable. It seems they are trying to say - look, there are all these people down at the branches, so why aren't you there as well? Hear them squeal and scream. You'd better hurry. It doesn't help at all. There's something to be said for more responsible editorial control. |

The major banks, historically but secretly fuel the runs on banks so that when it goes bust, they can call in their loans, particularly to businesses, which they wont be able to pay and so go bankrupt.
The major banks then snap them up for peanuts.
It has happened before and it will happen again so long as the Treasury is in the hands of private interests who control the money supply and not the governments of the people who use the cash the treasury prints.
It is exactly the way every stock market crash has happened and every one of those was deliberately manufactured by multi millionaire bankers (and media tycoons the likes of Murdoch who owns Sky and stands to make millions from a run) who lined their pockets while others starve.
It won't happen because people naturally feel the need to protect their interests above all others, but a bank only collapses when all the investors panic and grab their cash.
If they didn't the people that own the rival banks could never win. |

Yes, "it's a wonderful life". You think that the £3.5 million year MD, would have raised it's savers interest rates, yesterday. That may have cooled things down. It seems to me these so called experts have no more of a clue than, anyone else. They knew they were over exposed, they just hoped for the best. With the knowledge that they get paid in the short term. |

I can't believe the amount of people who are panicking. The queues are ridiculous. Okay, they want to open a new account somewhere else. But, really. Imagine being in a club with these people if a fire broke out and someone said "There's no need to panic." I shudder to think what would happen. |

Yes there is a run on the bank, and the effect is surely that this weakens the bank and makes it more likely it will collapse.
On the radio this morning there was a statement that if it does collapse then money would be given to investors by the banking industry or the government. |

There is certainly an air of no confidence in Northern Rock at the present. The authorities have said the bank is solvent, and customers should remain calm. |
