rocketcarhead | Not looking for any conspiracy theories, but does anyone REALLY know what drives the price of gas up or down? |
Please, no government bashing here. That's a totally different forum. I just want to know on a grand scale what exactly drives the price of a gallon of gas. Ultimately, who is behind it and who benefits? |

It used to be OPEC but as they now account for only 40% of supply (and 51% of the traded market) then it could be argued that they don't, though OPEC has a large influence on the price through witholding or increasing supplies. The days when OPEC would fix the price are gone
Oil futures and options contracts are increasingly used to price the physical stuff. And as traders are nervous to political risk and oil is located in "difficult" countries, then any adverse news will force up the price to discount the perceived additional cost of getting the stuff out of those 'difficult' countries. So everytime there is 'bad' news about Venezuala, Iraq, Iran, Russia or Saudi Arabia, the traders mark up the price on the exchanges and we pay more at the pump |

Supply and demand. The more SUVs on the road, the more gas demand and the higher the prices. In the US we are too greedy and materialistic. As long as people want the biggest and the best we will see gas continue to rise. I will actually throw a party when gas hits $8 a gallon. |

1) You are behind it.
2) Oil Companies benefit from it.
If you keep buying more and more gasoline every year (Like you are now) you will drive the prices up.
I suggest you to find out how many gallons of gasoline does the average person consumes per a year in 1980, 1990, 2000 and now.
If you really want the gas prices to go down all you have to do is buy a used Volkswagen (Or any other Brand) car with a Diesel Engine.
The Oil companies will lose a Gasoline customer forever and you will save thousands of dollars over the years too. |

Generally speaking it is supply and demand, just like anything else. The question to ask is what (or who) drives the supply? |

supply and demand.
OPEC controls a large portion of the world's oil, so they control supply, and use it to raise and lower prices. |

Like everyone else has said, generally supply and demand. These days, supply is controlled by OPEC and they like making money. I haven't done any extensive studies on the number of barrels that they've shipped every month, but I'm sure that information is easy to find. Cartels/monopolies maximize profits by raising prices and limiting quantity, which OPEC has done a decent job of doing.
On the other end, we're not really helping ourselves. Demand is very high with all of the travel that goes on, along with the whole lack of fuel economy in most vehicles. |
