Now we are in a recession do you think the Charity Shops should cut their prices. ?
A second hand paperback for £!.50. Ridiculous!
A used sports coat for £7.50.
Old gramaphone records for £2.00! Come on Oxfam get your finger out and lower the ruddy prices or haven't you heard of the recession yet!

The purpose of charity shops is to raise money for a good cause. It is not to subsidise the general public with cheap items. It seems that Oxfam and the Heart Foundation are the most expensive for books, but if some people are willing to pay the price asked (and some must be, otherwise the charges wouldn't be so high) you can't blame them for charging what they can get. The shops are obliged to get the best deal possible to help their cause.
It doesn't matter what the asset, whether a house or a paperback, it is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.

Gee the local Charity Shop in my town charges 1 dollar for everything.
On Sale day it is fill a bag for a dollar. You cannot charge less than that and still pay the rent.

If people stop buying they will be forced to lower their prices. If people are still buying, why would they lower the prices?

Supply and demand! At this time, they can charge as you say. However, try to deal for items. You are wise to shop there at least, I say.

You are right. Once I went in one and I thought for a couple of pence more I could buy a new one. For example, at one time classic stories were being sold for a poiund new and 1.50 in the charity shop. Makes you wonder if all that money is really getting through to the people who really need it

Hold on Spooks. While i agree with you in principle you probably happily pay £1.50 for your Sunday paper. A used paperback reads just the same as a brand new one. I was in an Oxfam shop today and saw a well worn pair of Levi's Jeans priced at £9 (well worn, not designed distressing!). A 1000pc Jigsaw - very nice one admittedly - at a ludicrous £7.50 ? (I bought the same puzzle a couple of days ago at an RSPCA shop for £1.25 )

I think i am probably right in saying that the Sue Ryder shops started the high prices trend. All the bigger Charity shops Oxfam, Cancer Research, Barnado's etc are rapidly raising their prices. But they are there to raise money for their Charities not to give you rock bottom prices. They are also increasingly stocking ranges of brand new goods. Personally i think that in the present financial climate they are going to price themselves out of the market. You are probably aware that Oxfam and one or two of the other biggies are now selling on ebay.

I think that traditionally individual shop managers set the prices in their store but that now they probably have national guidelines from head office.

Sarah
No, what is ridiculous is a second hand paperback book costing £3.50. Some charity shops are fair- I would expect to pay up to a £1 for a paperback book, remember they are trying to make money here! However some are absolutely ridiculous charity shops coughs *oxfam* and should definitely consider getting their act together.
