Because what the gas stations currently have in stock is oil contracts signed last month at the high price. Would you buy a board for 5 dollars and sell it to someone for 4 taking 1 dollar loss. I think not. |

It is being reflected. You just have to be patient. First of all, the gasoline going into your car comes from oil purchased a month ago. Second, gasoline station owners must purchase their gas for CASH on the market, which means they have to hedge their price against future events.
Being raped? Hardly. Keep your pants on.
You want to see how fast prices are dropping? I pass a station on the tollway heading for work. Monday morning they were charging $2.41 a gallon for regular. This morning (Friday) they were charging $2.23 ($2.229) a gallon. Eighteen cents in four days. Not bad. |

Gas price has been coming down though not fast enough compared to the oil price. It takes the refiners to manufacture gasoline from crude oil thereby there is some timing difference. We don't have enough refineries because no Americans want refineries in their backyard. No new refinery has been built in the last 30 years.
Also the oil and gas industry is quick to raise gasoline price when the price of crude goes up, but slow in reacting to lowering the price since we live in free market country, though l would rather live in free market country than country with communism.

Yes, I think this will effect on Gas also.
Gas will come down definately, as Crude is soo low.

Yep, yer getting raped right up the hoop. It's a fact of the free market economy. I believe they call it "sticky prices". Prices rise to reflect increases or perceived increases in costs but when those costs prices go down the prices don't drop as quickly. Never has, never will.
I read a good article today on the subject. Every company waits for the other to start dropping prices and since nobody wants to do it, it's a slow process. Some companies, like Coke and Pepsi, care more about what the other one is charging then what it costs them. I have yet to see a store with Coke on sale that didn't have Pepsi for the same price. Either one of them will lose money on the production side of their operation before they will let the other one undersell them.
The only way we can change things, at least as far as sticky prices are concerned, is to complain and complain loudly. |
