I saw a PBS special on Wal Mart once where even if the town folks didnt want a supercenter in the town, wal mart bribed the city board members to let them in and by the time the members were voted out, it was too late and wal mart was in. It was very dastardly the way they acted.
They keep as many employess on part time staus to avoid having to pay benefits, but a job is a job, it is better than being unemployed.
Sam Walton was a man who had a great idea, his company made him a rich man and he still drove an old truck.
Some folks think that for him to have taken th emoney from folks on a budget, and made trillions and still drove an old car and gave nothing to charity, made him a hypocrite.
Also, Wal MArt has a policy with suppliers... the item will only be sold IN wal mart if suppliers agree to wal mart's term... all suppliers are required to take back any item at full price if wal mart returns it to them NO QUESTIONS ASKED. My mom showed her boss once how their company was actually LOSING money using wal mart as the seeler of their product, but folks dont seem to want to boycott wal mart even after they have proven to be monsters.
Wal Mart makes it hard for the average Joe to have a family business, and all the money leaves the state and goes back to Arkansas, where the home base of Wally World is.... if you value th esmall business man, go to his shoe store for shoes... go to the tire shop run by your neighbor, go to the local grocery store instead of the supercenter..... it will be more trips, but hey, oh well.
Rodney Carrington saiys wal mart is a MANS store... add a strip club in there and he would bever want to leave.
I personally stay out of there as much as possible and I think you should too.
They put up a new wal mart every two days and their goal for 2007 is to put up a new one EVERY DAY....
so sam walton had a good idea... wish it had been mine.
Those kids who started You Tube just sold it for one point six BILLION dollars... America is grand. Any one of us could have done it.
PLUS i got a haircut at wally world one time and i could have done bette rmyself blindfolded with a bowl and a weedwacker.. NEVER GET A HAIRCUT AT WAL MART. |

There are many sexual harrassment lawsuits against many upper mangement, they are strongly against unions, they hardly ever promote women into upper mangement positions, and I'm sorry to say that the list goes on and on. Do you remember back when Kathie Lee Gifford had a line of her clothes there? Well it turned out that it was coming from a third world counrty that was using child labor. Wal-Mart blamed her, she blamed Wal-Mart and the issue was just swept under they rug, just like everything else at Wal-Mart. At our local store in a small twon in Texas no one, and I mean no one gets hired unless you are related to someone already working there or are very good friends with someone in management.
This is a true story personal about my own brother who had been working at our local store for almost 2 years and I will swear on the Bible on this...our Father passed away about 10 years ago this June and he took it really hard being the oldest and the only boy and he did get a depressed about it. They told him to take a week off for bereavement and he did, but something else was wrong and he just could not snap out of it. He began to miss work more and more until the main manager told him that he would start needing to see doctor's excuses for his missed days at work (which is funny because they have no insurance) he was in danger of losing his job so I made an appointment to see a doctor in the next town over because our town doesn't exactly have a great reputation for great doctors. We went and within 10 minutes of the doctor's exam he gave us the devestating news that he strongly suspected that my brother has MS (Multiple Sclerosis) but he had to send him to a neurologist to make the final diagnosis. Well it turned out that he does. The neurologist gave him a list of restrictions such as do not lift anything heavier than 50 lbs. eat healthier foods, take SMALL breaks during the day to help his circulatory system, try not to over stress and stuff like that. The whole family was devestated, but at least we knew what we were dealing with. When he went in to talk to the main manager at work with the paperwork from the doctor's office with his diagnosis of MS and what the doctor wanted to restrict him from they little by little cut his hours until it was "well we just don't know where we can place you with all this restrictions" and they promptly fired him. The could have put him to work in the electronics dept. (I never see anyone doing hard work there but open up the glass cases to get games out) the jewerly dept. is usually filled with 2-3 ladies talking about their Saturday night dates, and the door greeters are usually about 70-80 years old and when you say "Hello" I have learned not to ask "how are you doing" because they let you know every ailment they have had the night before and how the didn't want to come in that day, but the manager said they "had to"!!
See, so not only are they only interested in just putting money in their own pockets, they don't really care about they people who do or do not work their...they will just find a "replacement". Sorry about the long answer and I really hope that you do read it all. |

I say I'm anti-Walmart but I still shop there because it is the closest store and also the cheapest. The problem I have with it is that it is taking over all of the other stores. It's like a monopoly and I just feel bad for the workers of the smaller stores that end up getting shut down because they can't compete with walmart. It's just kinda sad.
I had to edit to add that Amanda B's comment literally made me laugh out loud! So true! |

Because there are rumours that they are cruel to their employees. Make them work through their legal break time. Make them work overtime and not get paid for it . They pay them the least money per hour that Walmart can get away with. They promote men and give them more money than woman of equal time and knowledge at Walmart. Besides, I think they are depressing inside their stores. I prefer Target much more ! Good Luck ! :) |

Walmart is an overwhelmingly successful business, but their morals and ethics are that of which are being questioned.
Because of their outsourcing, they can hire workers outside the United States to produce the products at a VERY low cost. The workers get unfair pay, and the local businesses simply cannot compete and go out of business - good news for Walmart. Walmart has destroyed the balance in the economy coming from small business that carry the same types of products. After all, why go pay more for a pair of socks you can get at Walmart for less? And also, because Walmart is such a large store, it is very convienent to get it all in one place. Some are so huge and carry so much, you could actaully /live/ in them quite comfortably.
Please support your local businesses by purchasing their products.
--- ALSO
Walmart provides jobs that have low pay and hardly any benefits...the workers are angry. |

I would never work for Wal Mart but I still shop there because of their low prices. I know a few people that work there and they are treated like crap. I just heard last week that they are supposed to be cuttignt heir number of fullt ime associates...this way they can pay less, no benefits, no vaction, etc...
plus now being sick is not a reason to call off! can you believe that???? and after 3 or so call offs you have to write an essay on why you want to work at wal mart!! |

one of the reasons is that it doesn't pay its employees enough, yet they rake in so much in profit.
also, their prices are so low they put small businesses out of business.
also, walmart employees are encouraged to get help from the state.
There's a whole documentar on Walmart, it's very informative. |

People hate the way Wal-Mart does business, but thats what makes them successful. The sad truth is .... "The lowest blow wins the fight." Whoever goes lower wins. Thats why at college you have Ethics 101 and Business ethics 101, screw others to get ahead, thats the only way forward.

Rent the Robert Greenwald movie "WAL*MART: The High Cost Of Low Prices".
Go here for more information: http://www.walmartmovie.com/
"...Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price is the documentary film sensation that's changing the largest company on earth. The film features the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to survive in a Wal-Mart world. It's an emotional journey that will challenge the way you think, feel... and shop..."
Released simultaneously in theaters and DVD in November 2005, the film has been seen by millions worldwide. Families, churches, schools, and small busineses owners have screened the film over 10,000 times and the world is taking notice. See the film, share it, and become part of the movement forcing companies to act responsibly..." |

i agree with tysavage. not only that they are starting to loose focus on what Sam Walton started. they are now closing there lay-a-way dept down, just in time for christmas. that is how so many low income families survive. |

It is just my opinion. But I believe that it is because when Wal-mart, came onto the scene. They put a lot of other smaller department stores out of business. The smaller business's could not compete. Especially after they started building their super stores. Smaller store's just could not compete with Wal-marts lower prices. And ended up going out of business. |

It is human nature to hate people or companies or anything that is wealthier or more successful than yourself. Wal-Mart does not force any of its employees to work there. The fact so many stay is a sign of how awful our education system is and how unskilled some people are.
I worked at Wal-Mart for a while when I was in college. They forced us to take breaks and told us we would get in trouble if we did not. Wal-Mart has a zillion stores. They won't all be run by Mother Theresa.
Their employees are free to leave at anytime. If something out there was better for them, they would go. I'm always amused to read how horrible and cruel they treat their employees, yet they stay. hmm...

So Walmart is the biggest. That in and of itself makes them a target--no pun intended- for all your complainers and naysayers who think you have better ethics and public responsability that does Wal Mart. Sorry to burst your climb on boad the hate wagon mentality, but it just ain't so. We have been a Wal Mart family for over 20 years. MY wife, son and daughterinlaw are long term full time walmart home office employees. My wife and I have both suffered major and expensive illnesses which Wal Mart's insurance has paid up the nose on. Their checks cash. We get a discount on all store morchandese except groceries. You anti Wal Mart campaigners better get your facts straight. One of these days you are "liable" to go up against their deep pockets in a "libel" suit. Terms y"all use like ALWAYS and NEVER in describing Wal Mart just show your total lack of knowledge about the company. I'm really getting tired of reading your worn out anti Wal Mart rhetoric. Oops---I gotta go cash a check and get some Wal Mart money and go pay my bills on time. I hope you are able to keeep up with yours! Wal Mart has good paying jobs, treats their employees fairly, provides good insurance and employee benefits and still lives up to Mr. Sam's credo. CYA later. I'm headed for Wal Mart! |
