Old and worthless people at work?
What should be done about a couple of old and worthless people at my work? They have exhorbitant salaries and screw up constantly. I fully recognize that much can be learned from "wise old owls" except the people I'm talking about are just old and not so wise.
I don't care how long they've been at this company or any of that. If I screwed up as much as they do, I would be fired. They just go and do their own thing, refuse to change, and continue to be unprofitable. This is a business, not a charity. Additional Details "If I'm not their boss then butt-out" is not good advice. We are an employee-owned company and when they screw up and cost us money with their incompetence, then it most certainly becomes my business.
I understand how you feel. As a supervisor, I've had to discipline many people on productivity, older people as well. I have to harden my heart a little because in the end it is about someone's ability to do a job. Sometimes it's not a matter of letting them go, but simply putting out the idea that maybe they would like another position with the company. This is the same with my younger workers with productivity issues. Many times they want to do well, but the specific job is not the right fit for their skill level. The choice is always theirs to make, but they do realize that I will have to continue the discipline process if they choose to stay in the same position and the productivity does not improve.
I always want everyone at my company to succeed. That includes being stern from time to time with individuals that need to step it up to make sure the team can keep functioning well.
Your boss just needs to practice some of that 'tuff love'.

Well, we all know that you'll run into morons who somehow hoodwink the people who could and should get rid of them. But if they can manage it for an entire career, it's possible that they do have some value that you are not perceiving.
You seem to stress the old part a bit. Is it possible that you are being blinded by your own personal dislikes?

I know people like this. All you have to do is to look at the people who forecast the weather every day and wonder how they keep their jobs.
Down to earth
If you are not the boss, and have no say in who's hired and fired- butt out, none of your business. It will only turn around and bite you if you say anything. They may have been great at one time and the boss feels a loyalty- no way of knowing.

IF YOU ARE THE BOSS THEN LAY THEM OFF OR FIRE THEM.
IF NOT THEN GO TO YOUR SUPERVISOR WITH THE PROOF OR HUMAN RESOURCES
GET ANOTHER JOB BUT DON'T QUIT UNTIL YOU HAVE THE OTHER JOB. THEN WHEN YOU GIVE YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING SAY BETTER JOB, BETTER PAY.

I don't know, but I would treat them the same as the new and lazy people.
You know who they are:
Always talking on their cell phones.
Surfing the internet.
Playing computer games.
POSTING QUESTIONS ON YAHOO ANSWERS during working hours.
