undecided | Overseas Contracting is it worth it? |
|
|

It depends on your current situation and what you would be doing overseas. With no job prospects here then the answer might be yes as they are not being very particular right now on skills. Meaning - they'll train in order to get people on site. If you have a marketable skill: truck driver, mechanic, welder, construction, translator, etc. Then again, the answer could be yes. The pay for these skilled positions is getting larger everyday that they go without them overseas.
If however, you have a solid job here and romantic interests then the answer might be no, as being gone can have devastating effects on the relationship. Quitting your job for one that's temporary is not smart either.
So weigh the pros and cons for yourself. Remember that in order to gain the ex-Patriot tax benefits you must be gone from US holdings for the full year or you'll taxed up the ying-yang. |

If by "oversees contracting" you mean buying and/or selling to companies outside of North America, my answer is definitely yes, with several caveats.
My company sells to countries all over the globe, and how to get paid is a major concern. It is our policy to get a wire transfer in advance, so we receive monies before we ship the product.
Another concern is freight. We ask that the customer provide us with the method of shipment and that the freight is billed collect, not pre-pay and add.
Yet another is the different certifications and standards of foreign countries. Make sure to know the details of you customers order so that it does not bite you back from across the globe.
I hope this was helpful to you. Good luck with it! |

I'll put it to you this way. Right now I can pick up $500K per year plus bonus for going to work in Iraq. Of course ending up dead is one of the job hazards. It's great to do if you are single.
You'll need to set up an offshore bank account since the last thing you want to do is let the US get at all of that tasty money. |
