People phone for enquiry & ask my name without introducing themselves. How do I tell them its not polite.?
I work at the front line and think its not polite of people asking for my name first and never bother to introduce themselves.

Just say: "And may I ask who is calling?"

Simply reply:

"How may I assist you? May I have your name please, sir (or madam)?"

I find these quite common nowaday. People seem to be lack of tele-communication manner. I always ask them back politely for their name because I answer their enquiries.

Tell them it's not polite to ask your name without introducing themselves first.

You are right. I hate that to. The caller should always give their name first.

I especially hate when my friends of family do it. I don't hear well and am terrible at recognizing voices. After a phrase of two, I just come out and say, "Who is this please?"

If they are insulted that I didn't recognize their name, tough! It's just plain courtesy to announce yourself first.

maybe when you're answering a phone, you can identify yourself first and ask who you're speaking to?

e.g."Hi this is XXX, May I know who am I speaking to?"

you may resent that being someone who works at the front line but it is can also feel irritating for some people who CALL the frontiline that they are "expected" to ask for your name?? Half the time, they'll be thinking "what happened to customer service?" when you are thinking "What happened to phone etiquette?"

Ask their name first and toward the end give them your name.
