Phone call from "Travel Agency Direct" said I won hotel voucher - asked for my bank's routing number. Fraud?
I provided him with my bank's name, but told him I was uncomfortable giving out the routing number. He said not to be - that everyone's routing number is the same & that he didn't want my money ... I had "misunderstood" him. He said he got my name, address & telephone number (cell) from a purchase I had made with my checking account, but he didn't know which one. I ended up hanging up on him ... cause I usually don't get weird calls like that on my cell.

Anyone heard of this place? I'd like to know if they're legit - not because I want the stinking hotel vouchers, but because I want to make sure my account is protected.

Bank branches do use the same routing number, like a ZIP code for a street address. However, it does sound like the makings of a scam. You did the right thing.

If you do not check a company before entering into a transaction, you could lose your money, time and credibility. Some widely used resources are the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the national fraud center ( www.fraud.org) These days, you can easily find out more about a company using the internet in a few minutes. From a company's website, you can details about its ownership, how old the company really is and feedback from the company's customers.
You can find more detailed information about a company at http://tinyurl.com/gtb89

yes, definitely fraud. never give out you bank numbers unless you know for sure who they are. you did good to hang up.

Bored FSA
Absolutely a fraud.

I live in California and this morning I recieved the same phone call you did. They said they were from Travel Agency Direct and offered me hotels and flight coupons. They then proceeded to ask for my bank name then asked me for my checking routing number. My mind kept saying "RED FLAG RED FLAG!" I've never had anyone on the phone ask for my routing number, so this was very suspicious. Never give out any banking information.

God, I hate scammers.

Don't do it!

They don't need a bank number to send you a gift. Think about it. American Airlines doesn't ask for your bank's account info when they send you a frequent flyer ticket. Why would this person need it to send you a hotel certificate. I smell a scam.

sounds like a scam to me. you were right not to give him any more info and hang up. if it makes you feel better go down do the bank and talk to them. they'll probably say that since you didn't give out the routing number it'll be fine.

kit_roamer
Duh...yah...if everybody's routing number is the same, why would he need to ask what your is?

It was probably a scam. You should never give out any information like that. If you won a hotel voucher, there is no reason for them to have any of your personal information like that. Tell them to mail it to you and that you will not pay to insure it. If it's legit, then they will do that. If not, who cares.

You should contact your bank and put a fraud alert on all of your accounts so you have some extra protection.

Max123
Definitely a fraud. No one needs to know your bank's routing number..........

h0kiegal
FRAUD!! Don't do it!! And please notify your bank not to accept any draft requests from this company. You should NOT have even given him your bank's name!!! You are right to be suspicious. Any time you have to pay for something you've supposedly won, it's a FRAUD!!!

Another thing....always check with BBB if you have any doubt about a company. They can tell you if it's legit or not.

Granny Good Witch
SCAM !!! Don't get duped. Keep your cell turned off & just check your voice mail.

Simple rule of thumb... NEVER, never give ANY banking details to someone you dont know. Especially if they have called you and not the other way around.

That's what hey call "PHISHING" where they call and fish fo information. If he had gotten your name and address from a purchase you had made with your checking account, then he already had your bank routing and account numbers. Did you jot down his phone number from your caller ID? Just in case there is any funny business.

Don't give anyone your banking information. There are numerous 'scams' going on all over the world. Why would he need your banking information to give you a prize?

SCAM city. They feed you false information in the hopes that you'll say something like, oh that's wrong, my correct bank account number is 1234546665. That plus the routing number and you'll be cleaned out. Any calls like this, don't be polite, hang up, and/or call your fraud hotline, particularly if you have caller id, tell the police the number.
