Poll: Do you feel supermarkets are taking advantage of the gas price increases to raise their prices ?
For substantially higher profits

Without a doubt, basic economic principles account for most of the increase in the wholesale cost of food worldwide. Bad weather has hurt crops. Economic prosperity has driven up demand in developing countries. And soaring fuel prices have raised transportation costs. Mix in investors betting on continued food-price inflation and you have a recipe for a run-up. Love, honey

It's probably costing the supermarkets more money to have the food transferred to the store because gas prices are so high. Therefore they have to raise their prices too. It's such a mess!

ed
Cost of food includes the cost of transportation.

Diesel has tripled for truckers as well as gas.
Do you honestly think that all the competition in groceries are conspirators?

That's the most competitive business in the market place.

Texas granny turtle
THEY are not making more profit...HOW do you think that stuff gets there? IT is by diesal which has skyrocketed. DONT you see those trucks in your town>>> Why should they take less profit to deliver it then before when it costs 25% MORE to get it to warehouse or stores>>> IT is a dominoe effect that is HURTING everyone. *mamatx

The price of fuel affects everyone. The manufacturers are raising the price that the retailer pays because they are paying more to make the products and get the products to the retailers. Therefore, the retailers must raise prices in order to keep their heads above water. The only ones making a substantially higher profit are the oil companies.

keypointist
No to be honest I think most supermarkets are taking a drop in profits by not passing the full increase of their delivery costs on to customers.

YES, have you noticed the price of COffee!!! DOUBLE price, and freakin shrimp,

Of course they are, in big business anything is game. If the soul of someone had monetary value they (big business) would probably find a way to get it... Gas at this point in time is what we could call liquid gold. Therefore making everything else even store brands increase.
