Pros and cons: Should public schools be converted to for profit enterprises?
Additional Details "Lucrative in the right hands" sounds like for-profit, but not publicly traded, but you're still thinking just private when you include non-profit organizations. I'm talking for-profit, possibly publicly traded enterprises. If you don't like the idea, why does it bother you? Remember: your kids will be attending there.
Isn't this already the case somewhat? There are private schools out there already.
If you're asking if ALL public schools should be converted to profit enterprises, then NO! Many people can't even afford to attend college.
Our country would be become more stupid than it is.

I live in Arizona and worked for a successful Charter School Management for nine years. A Charter School is basically a public school managed by a private management company. The management company gets paid through the same government funding a "normal" public school would. The schools are run more like businesses with an emphasis on fiscal efficiency and academic results. This concept works best with smaller niche schools which we have plenty of here (Schools of Performing Arts, Prep Academy, etc). I think when schools are scrutinized closer and their performance measured our children win out. These type of schools market themselves to parents and students but also have to justify the funds being used to support it. Technically these schools although "free" to students and "non profit". They still generate MIllions a year...those millions of tax payers dollars then go back in to cover administrative, expansion and improvement costs and such. So it's technically not a for profit enterprise...but definitely lucrative in the right hands....
Sorry my answer was so long....:)

My kids go to a charter school run by a for profit business and we don't pay to go. Most of the kids in our first grade class read at 2nd grade level or above.
