bball_samurai | Public Speaking? |
Can you all give me some advice for some public speaking? I will be doing a presentation before a vice president and other important figures of this corporate business, and I get extremely nervous when I begin speaking. Also, the information I'll be presenting is really new (even foreign) to me. And words of advice? I could use it! Thanks. ^_^ Additional Details What if I'm asked a question and I don't have the answer? |

Step 1 - Learn your material backwards and forwards. You need to really know what you are talking about before you can ever hope to effectively communicate the info to others.
Step 2 - Practice in-front of a friend. First have them just sit there until you are done. Then, have them interrupt you with questions during the presentation. You never know how your audience will be so you need to be comfortable with both.
Step 3 - Remember not to speak too quickly...When I first started to speak in front of people, I stammered and spoke very quickly due to being nervous...just take deep breaths and take your time.
Step 4 - Make eye contact with each person for a few seconds tthroughout the presentation. It will help you by tricking your mind into thinking you are just talking to 1 person (dont ask me why..but it works). |

Be confident in yourself. Remember that no matter what their position they are just people - no different than you. Don't be intimidated by them. Also, get as comfortable with the information you will be presenting as possible. The level of confidence you have in the knowledge of your material is bound to come across so study it and become familiar with it. Prepare yourself for any questions. The more prepared you are the more confident you will feel. I believe confidence is the key. Have faith in yourself and try to have fun with it. Seriously. No caffeine before you speak and drink warm - NOT COLD - water before speaking. If your voice shakes when you begin speak louder and it will go away. Take a deep breath before you begin and smile! It will take the edge off you and relax your audience. Good Luck! |

Ok the first step to public speaking is to avoid saying, "Uhm". It shows you are unprepared and it shows you are a small time waster. Also, make sure you are making eye contact with those you are speaking to. If there are multiple people, make eye contact with all of them. Also, be sure to dress appropriatly. Speak loud and clearly. Practice is the key to all speeches. |

I do stand-up comedy which is a much scarier form of public speaking.
3 rules - rehearse, rehearse, rehearse -know what you are going to say
Have water nearby for dry mouth (very common)
Breathe and take your time while speaking. What seems like a long pause to you is un noticed by the audience.
Remember, they are as nervous for you as you are.
If all else fails, imagine them all in their underwear.
good luck |

Get as comfortable as time will allow with your info. This always helps. Also, when you get nervous, and you will, remember that its just your body's natural reaction to being in an unusual situation. Your nervousness doesn't mean you are going to do bad, or that you aren't qualified, it just means you are doing something you don't do everyday. |

Done a lot. Here's good advice.
First - most important - learn the subject so thoroughly you're a master of it. Lack of knowledge of what you're talking about is apparent in the first ten seconds.
Second - remember that all those people are pulling for you to do well. They find it painful just like you do to be trapped there watching someone be uncomfortable at the podium. They aren't the enemy - or critics - they're on your side.
Third - Remember that you are cuter, smarter, and more loveable than you realize. You will have many friends and allies out there from first minute.
Start with a smile and watch them respond.
Fourth - keep looking at one friendly face out there, near the middle if possible. You do not have to try to give equal eye contact to all. If you try to do that your mind will wander as you notice who's ugly, whose hair isn't combed, etc.
Back to number one. You MUST know the material cold. And stay yourself. No one expects you to be anyone else. go get 'em! |

Study, study and study your materials. You said your topic is foreign to you - then research on it as much as you can. Learn everything you can about the topic
Ask yourself what are the possible questions these executives will ask. If you have had a chance to see these executives in action during presentations of your colleagues - what are their styles? What types of questions do they commonly ask? What type of information do they want to know? If you can anticipate their questions, then you can be better prepared for your presentation.
Talk with a boss or another coworker who has given presentations and ask them what types of questions are often asked. There are executives who want to cut to the chase and ask immediately - "What does that mean for the company?"
Will you be using presentation tools such as Powerpoint? If you have numbers or charts, Powerpoint can be a great tool. Just make sure you don't read off your presentation - that is excruciatingly boring. Polish your powerpoint making sure that it is not too long.
If you have the time, find the book "Presentation S.O.S.: From Perspiration to Persuasion in 9 Easy Steps" by Mark Wiskup.http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0446695548/powerhomebizguid/104-3829973-9823133?creative=327641&camp=14573&adid=0FT8KXB2N7W47G942SC4&link_code=as1 It's a very good easy to read book. Among his suggestions are in terms of what not to do when you start your presentation:
- Do not thank the audience - build connection with the audience fast and thanking them is just a waste of time ("Prince, Madonna, Garth, Beyonce -- all perform first and thank later...Speakers should learn from this lesson).
- Do not tell the audience how glad you are to be with them - again, rapport building is the first thing a speaker must do
- Starting with a joke is harder than it looks - do it only when you know you can be really funny, not cringe-inducing
- Don't say "I've been asked to speak about" - it sounds like you want to speak about something else
- No apologies!
- Shouting good morning is trouble
One of the author's suggestion -- that really works -- is the importance of stories. Wiskup said that to be an effective speaker, you need to "create a specific story person who will help you define your presentation agenda." Give concrete examples, such as specific cases where it affects your company. Execs love that.
Relax, and enjoy the moment. If you are well prepared, then you can be more confident. If they ask you something that you don't know, don't invent because they can smell it and your credibility will just go down the drain. Tell them that you will look up the answer and will get back to them. This approach shows them that you can be relied upon to give more thoughtful and correct answer, rather than pretend to know everything but it's so obvious that you don't know anything.
Good luck |

Try to be well prepared, talk only the necessary, maybe you can use power point as back up of the things you are talking, this will help to remember everything, and be focus, nothing else............
GOOD LUCK¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ |

Comfort with presenting comes from being comfortable with the information you are presenting. Ever noticed how you never have to think long about things you are passionate about, it comes out with out force or alot of contemplation. The more comfortable you are with the information the easier it will be. Practice as well helps. |

Brush up on and learn about whatever it is you'll be talking about. This will give you confidence and that is the key. |

just remember that you are prepared. if you look confident, you will give off the aura of being confident. if someone asks you a question you don't know respond like this:
"You bring up an interesting point, thank you for your insight, I will have to look more into that."
or something like that.
P.S. thanks for helping me get to a 1,000 points. |

I completely empathize with you. I've been there, no advice was good enough. I was taking advices 5 min's prior to giving mine under sim. conditions.
Just think'n about it, my heart would start beating in my chest and I'd start touch'n my face.
What I can tell you is:
> Practice (standing) in front of a full mirror and kind of deliver your presentation (this will be your failsafe back up plan, I'll explain...)
>Questions are asked usually based on what you've just delivered, or close to it. So be ready to expand.
>Use a "loud" clock and use it as a pace setter, don't speed until you run out of breath, 'cause then you'll panic and be fighting two fronts with an out of pace breathing and your delivery.
>Don't pull out your pages 'n pages of notes, but rather just an outline with the fewer key words the better ( per point).
>Try bringing a small picture of your pet or something you really love and lay it on the lectern, or tape it on the second page where it is easy to get to, in case you'll need it to bring you back in focus to sooth you, if you panic but don't space out.
>Instead of fidgeting around like a nervous paperclip (whatever this means, sorry just came out) utilize your hands and arms a bit to drive a point.
>If you start freaking out relax and go back to your comfor zone, like seeing your reflection on something just as you had practiced before in front of a mirror, even just your face. Just to kick start, don't overdue it, else they'll think ...., who knows.
>Look at people's glass frames, etc. don't stare at their eyes or mouths, for some reason those two areas have always thrown me out. Look over their heads or in between them.
>Don't look at your watch, if poss. don't bring it.
>Best thing is know your material, don't memorize everything. i.e. expalin how something is supposed to work rather than memorizing steps 1 thru 20, because if you skip one or two steps, PANIC time, and have to go to the finger counting procedure extraordinare while staring at the ceiling or the table.
For example, what happens first like, start by opening the door of your car, sitting down, removing your club, key in ignition, ... etc.
>If all fails, go to your doctor and get an Rx of Zanax. If that won't work call in sick ;)
>>> If you don't know an answer, Nerver, Never make stuff up. Be honest 'bout it and tell him/her that you'll personally look into it and will deliver it to him/her as soon as you find it, and ask where would he like it delivered.
X Don't drink too muck caffeine. Don't chew gum in there X
Goog Luck ;} |

Your sense of confidence will eventually come from FAMILIARITY with your material gained from a speaking out loud in public places type of PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE AND MORE PRACTICE !!!!! ...and IF you are asked a quesiton you dont have an answer for... address it with your PRACTICED REPLY of
1st a compliment like: HMN, THAT'S AN EXCELLENT QUESION!
2nd a shield deflection like: I'LL BE SURE TO LOOK INTO THAT IN THE FUTURE !
...also get out your library card and visit the AUDIO BOOK section of your library, and ask the librarian if they have the cd or cassette for the book: "Public Speaking for Dummies" excellent book. i just read it last month for a similar project. oh yeah, there's also a FUN audio book called "How to get your point across in 30 seconds or less" by Milo Frank.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK ...and you will be fine. no problem.
that's how even the professionals do it.
no biggie once you've internalized these principles.
=D
=HulkSmaash!
[i'm posting this in both places in answer to your quesion.] |
