LifesAMystery | Question for managers and recruiters? |
I've been at my company for 3 years. I work along side four women who are extremely volatile. (1) throws tantrums and cries if you ask her a question, (2) cries at her desk when she's frustrated until she gets the "what's wrong?" so that she can vent, (3) offers up too much information (really nasty stuff too), (4) is a snake, she spreads lies and rumors and then has a "what did I do?" mentality when she's caught.
It's really annoying, frustrating, and our work environment has been allowed to turn to crap, because our manager is incapable of dealing with these people. Instead, he keeps asking the rest of us to be considerate of their feelings, because they're sensitive. Or, in the case of the snake, to be careful of what we say to her since she lies and gossips.
So I've decided to leave, but I'm worried that I'll run into the same type of people, but with different faces. Is my decision to leave hasty? |

No matter where you go there will be people you do not get along with and that you wish someone would just deal with. Actually no matter where you go there will be someone who doesn't like you to. That is just the nature of people. If you are truely miserable in your job, leave and get a new one.
Remember, at any job, it isn't the co-workers who make the job, it is the job. Do your best to get into a company and position that you enjoy so much that your co-workers affect you less. You will be amazed what a difference that makes.
Now, re dealing with the above personalities. #1, well I have no idea, that is a tough one. #2, ignore her crying. When she sees you are ignoring her, she will stop. #3, I am not sure what kind of info it is she is offering, but when you start to get uncomfortable, excuse yourself with the I have a lot of work to do, and go back to working. #4, if she is lying and you know she is lying just say "that is not true" and look her in the eyes. You can also ask her to not bother spreading rumors and gossip around you. At the same time, watch yourself. Are you gossiping? Are you telling stories out of school. Think about the conversations you guys are having and try to find out if maybe you have helped to aggrevate the situation.
I am not saying you are, but I have found that when people come to me about people gossiping, they are frequently gossipers themselves.
Good luck with your decision, whichever you decide to do. |

Your decision is OK. Not everywhere is full of basket cases but choose your next job carefully. |

There's always that chance. But why would you want to stay at a place where you know you are not happy? I rather go out there and take that chance to find a place where I would be happy at. |

Leaving is a good option, but wait until you have somewhere to go. no income=no money=no life.
good luck =] |

If you have been at the same company for three years there may be more than one benefit of you leaving besides just getting away from annoying coworkers. You have shown an ability to work in a difficult environment for a long time so you're obviously not just jumping from job to job.
Your salary and other benefit options won't generally increase as fast by staying at the same company as it might if you accept a new position elsewhere, and you may even have the opportunity to find a position with either more responsibility (a supervisory position of some kind) or other benefits, which would make you happier.
Try to look though while staying gainfully employed because depending on where you live and what industry you are in, it may be difficult to find something quickly, and there is always the potential of not getting in at the same level. As annoying as these ladies may seem now, it is nothing compared to being unemployed for awhile, particularly if you leave just to find something better.
I'd also recommend you avail yourself of any possible training opportunity you can before you leave. If they have any paid training program whether it be professional certificates, daily seminars, or even on-the-job training, I'd take it at their expense so that when you do decide to leave you will reap the benefit of that extra knowledge (the same as you would should you decide not to leave). If you have done a good job there and your bosses like you, you may even want to consider asking them what advacement possibilities there are there and what they would need to see from you that would allow you to pursue those opportunities. This would help you get out of your situation by putting you in a different position (and possibly a different desk), give you some extra income, and you wouldn't have to deal with the stress of looking for work or starting a new job.
I would never recommend pretending/trying to leave just to see how valuable you are to your current company (giving them notice or an ultimatum to see if things will get better), but sometimes even when you are just doing what is best for yourself by trying to find a better/more lucrative working environment, things at your company may still even work out for the better and you may decide to stay. Have a plan in mind though (your resume updated and circulating, extra savings in the bank, etc) before you do anything though to get through any possible transition as smoothly as possible. |
