Danger Mouse | Question for upper management? |
Why do you (often) prefer to promote someone who kisses @$$ rather than someone who is willing to give you an honest opinion?
Why do you prefer someone who will consistently tell you that everything is running smoothly (presumably so they don't look bad in your eyes), rather than someone who will admit that things are definitely not going to plan? Additional Details FYI... No I have NOT just been turned down for promotion, I run my own business. |

As the owner of my own business, I need staff who are prepared to stand-up and say actually that is bollo*ks, and challenege what I do and say, but equally I need people who will do as I want.
I personally would promote people that I can trust with my business and if they asked how high when I said jump, I would be worried that they are not committed to the ethos of the business but to pleasing me, which is not a quality I want.
I'd rather have unhappy days but a successful business than happy days and a business that is going down the pan. |

Team members who are not afraid to speak frankly are the greater asset. Smart managers who surround themselves with honest, capable staff rise very fast and very far in _most_ corporations, taking their team along with them.
Unfortunately, +I+ currently work in the opposite environment where b_u_t-t kissers and yesmen get to stay, get raises, etc., and those who are honest with themselves and with others get to stand on the unemployment line.
It all evens out, though, plus I have the added advantage of being able to sleep with a clear conscience.
BTW, I am currently the survivor of 6 rounds of layoffs and still not a kissup.

Obviously you are not management material |

I think it's always good to go for honest opinions. Staff who are willing to give honest critics are much better investments. I don't think sensible managers would be swayed easily by those who only have 15 minutes worth of content! |

As a senior manager I would always prefer someone who is honest and is going to tell me how things are.
Amy senior manager worth their salt will always check i.e ask for evidence of what they are being told rather than take someone at their word.
All my managers have to have regular meetings with me and they have to be able to back up what they are telling me , if they are being dishonest or hiding things then I will not hesitate to take action against them, it is not productive for anyone. |

I agree, asking the boss will drop you back to the line.
You want to get out and join somewhere where your skills are appreciated. Any management team needs different types of people for it to run smoothly, thinkers, workers, leaders. If you only have one type then the system will fall down at some time. Not all managers are looking for *** kissers. Some of us look for constructive crititism, but if I decide to forge on I expect you to give it your all, as its my *** on the line if it goes **** up. |

Oh dear, bad day ziggy? I'd say that it's because when they report their management it's easier for them to kiss a*se and look good if it seems everything is running smoothly. I think if you're actually dealing with the very top of the tree (ie the owners of companies) they prefer to hear the truth and appreciate it as long as it's constructive but everyone else going down the scale is more intereted in kissing a*re and saving their own necks, pay rise, company car and position rather than any real interest in the company. They're too chicken to step out of line. Jusy my opinion but, hey, you did ask for it. |

Management doesn't live in the real world. Where I work we have about 6 people that call themselves management. These positions are why many companies go bankrupt.
Our managers run around thinking up new ways of doing the same things by adding in an extra 10 steps and 5 more man hours to the task.
Way too many people who can't think are trying to do the thinking. They also promote the @$$ kissers because they made it to where they are by the same procedure.
They recognize the value of a yes man to make themselves look better. It is better to have someone who will follow along without original ideas then it is to have someone who might stir things up and make waves. |
