Re: Ebay. Are they doing anything about the 'sniping' of ebay items by people bidding at the last nano second.
This just happened to me. I understood Ebay was doing something to stop this because a bidder has every right to see the last bid and if they are outbid to give them time to bid again. The person who 'sniped' me paid twice what I was bidding so I guess that is revenge enough.
Additional Details
Thanks for the answers, I see there is a diverse group of answerers. I am not a cheapskate. I had bid 15.99 on a coat and at the last nano second someone bid 38.00-that's kinda stupid if you ask me. The idea of an auction is to get it as cheap as you can. If I want to pay full price I'll go to the mall.

I don't know, but I wish they would do something. I could just scream when that happens.

ummm...dude...Sniping is a PART of eBay. And eBay will never stop sniping. If someone gets a higher bid in, even if it is a millisecond before the auction ends, it is perfectly legal to do so. If they did it how you are talking about and let everyone see the last bid then it would be pointless to have an ENDING time.

This is what auctions are about, that is part of the challenge. If E-Bay allowed everyone time to outbid the last bid, then the auction would never end. The best way to win is to decide what you are willing to pay for the item at the most, and bid it. Then you hope that you get it. I've been outbid at the last moment and mainly was upset because I would have paid more than the amount that won it. You can't win all auctions, but it is fun to try.

this is the reason for ebay, you should have put a higher bid in, and if that person was paying more than you wanted to you didn't want that item that bad in the first place

This is my own personal opinion. If you have ever been to a true live auction, the bidding can be fast and furious, sometimes taking the price of the item well past it's true value. This happens on eBay too. Unfair? Perhaps. But that's how sellers make money, and buyers get things they may not otherwise be able to find. You bid the max of what you want to pay for the item. Is the 60 year old Cootie game I bought at Christmas time worth the $25 I paid? No, but the memory of that game is priceless to me. I would have paid twice that. Crazy? Probably. But it's my money. That's what eBay is. If you want a deal, go to outlet stores. If it's impossible to find, shop eBay.

No, ebay encourages this. There are web sites that do this for people.

They get a lower price that way.

You can always bid more, in advance on eBay, and your bid will snipe everyone's if it is high enough.

apparently the person who "sniped" you wanted the item more than you did so was willing to pay more for it than you were willing to pay. when the time runs out the highest bidder wins. i've been "sniped" and i do a bit of "sniping". it's just how the game is played. you're just being a whining sore loser.

i bet the seller was glad to get twice the amount you were willing to pay for the item. maybe next time you'll be a little faster on the bid button and not be so cheap.

Actually, I like the way Ebay is set up now... In the beginning, you bid your max, and everybody saw your max as the high bid, and at the last second somebody would drop in a bid just 50ΒΆ higher.

Today, you bid your max and your max is hidden showing only a high bid of a set increment above the previous high bid. If somebody sets a high bid between the shown high, and your max, the system will automatically bid for you to stay the high bidder until somebody bids above your max. If your max can be high enough, you won't be outbid.

but don't bid more than you are willing to pay

In a real auction, the auctioneer would never shout SOLD if people were still bidding on an item. He waits until there is no longer interest in an item, and has gotten the most money he could for it. So, if I were to suggest a better option, it would be to have the system look at the time remaining on the clock when each bid is received, then, if that time is less than 1 hour, re-set the clock to 1 hour, so that you have a chance to revise your bid. And the item will only close if there is no activity during the past hour, or if closed by the seller.

But thats my suggestion.

Sniping is part of the eBay experience, and all bids placed before a listing ends are valid - even if they're placed one second before the listing ends.

i think the idea of an auction is not to get something cheap (however, sometimes that happens). the idea of an auction is "how much is the item worth to you", thats why someone would bid twice as much as you. nothing against you, i love a bargain too and this has happened to me. but its all about the highest bid taking it all. good luck!!

They pay for programs that do this automatically. There is really nothing eBay can do.

Honest Answer
I think a bigger problem with EBAY is the dumb people who run the price to high way before the end of the auction (2 - 3 days) instead of using the "Watch this item" feature.

Maybe people should take a training course before they are allowed to have an EBAY account.
