We had a man round a few months back asking about recycling. we have two bins so do more than most btw. What I told him was that I would like to see that we can recycle ALL plastics not just a few, annoyingly we are subject to 1 and 4 I think so don't quote me on that one. Also as you say, why should veg need to be packaged for us? We go to the farmers market and it isn't, use hemp sacks, recycle everything that we can including glass which is another sore area for me. I asked to have a glass bin also, no go there folks.

But the biggest way to not leave a huge carbon footprint is to not take holidays aboard. Do not fly! Do not buy outof country as a normal weekly shop. Walk places you can. Do not use a microwave for all your meals and to de frost and re heat.
Simple but effective.

Vast Standard
Agree, more money is needed to find different ways of packaging materials with more environment friendly materials.

Just say no. !!!Take reponsibility for yourself and don't buy it! Can't blame others for what you yourself are guilty of. If people didn't buy it, they wouldn't sell it. No profit in that, is there????

Neither - sitting in the middle on this one only because it's not always the retailer's fault that products are so badly packaged. The responsibility needs to go to the wholesalers or the manufacturers who introduced all the wasteful packaging in the first place.
Till point protests work if it's really the retailer's fault, if not, it's not fair to blame them.
Surely some products need a lot of packaging to avoid damage, leaks etc. But like others have said things like fresh fruit & veg doesn't.
I do think everyone should find ways to 'reduce, reuse, recycle' as much as possible.

Agree BUT manufacturers should share that responsibility and buyers should take responsibility for necessary (as opposed to excess) packaging

Agree.

Disagree. It's society that deems the need for the packaging, not the company. Take McDonalds for example. They package each item in a box or bag and then put it in another bag. All the packaging serves a purpose and if they served the food on washable plates then the costs would go up due to the extra labour involved. The companies use the packaging because they see it as necessary to keep the food fresh and the customers happy. If they felt they could reduce I'm sure they would as it would mean less cost for them and more overall profits. Unfortunately we live in a disposable society these days. People have little time for cooking or buying fresh produce so resort to weekly shopping and frozen foods. If the system of the stay at home parent was still in practise then it would be easier to revert back to the old style of living. Seeing as families need two incomes and most spoil themselves with luxuries that are unneeded now it is impossible to cut down on disposable items.

I do exactly the same!!! The amount of packaging in my kitchen after doing a weeks shopping drives me nuts. I try to stick to using local shops, greengrocers and butchers so that I avoid a lot of the waste.

agree--but the buyers must be responsible too...

tyrone.campbelltwells
Agree that retailers should hold a certain amount of responsibility with regards to which suppliers they buy from based on packaging but as a retail manager I can tell you it isn't as straight cut as that. If there are only 2 suppliers of a particular product and one has barely any packaging but the product costs £15 per unit compared to the supplier with a load of packaging that costs £10 a unit, from a business point of view I'll always go with the £10.

I think the real responsibility lies with the manufacturer. I see countless products that are needlessly over packaged, so why do they do it? It makes no sense sometimes. Less packaging, smaller size, you get more on a shelf, less bulky for customer to take home, doesn't that sound better?
