I don't necessarily think they need a salary... if that happened, their union would most likely be dismantled.

However, being that the union is what got them into a majority of this mess (constantly pushing for higher wages, pensions, etc.), it might be a good idea to get rid of the UAW.

Their wages will come under INTENSE scrutiny if these bailouts go through. They are WAY too high.

Confused ...
The root cause of today's mess is UAW and ugly 3 management. The first thing that needs to be done is to get rid of the outdated UAW, get rid all the corrupted top level management, get rid all the MBAs in the ugly 3 who only know how to talk, how to do powerpoint but know nothing of their business. If one does not believe this, just look at how Toyota, Honda, Nissan,... operates their business.
P.S. I used to work for one of the ugly 3 and I know well about those UAWs. If one has a college degree that is not related to engineering, math, science, it will not add any extra value on the assembly line like any other high school graduates. As long as one works for others, he/she is paid to do so with no complains. If one does not like the job, he/she should quit to find another one if he/she is able. UAW is an outdated product since 1960s and it should be removed together with those top level management if one still hope US Auto would have a "future". To be honest with oneself, how many today's UAW workers would like to switch their position to work for Toyota, Honda, Nissan, .... without UAW instead of the ugly 3 under UAW?

To the asker:
If all UAW workers are treated as salaried workers without UAW, without so-called "job bank", that will be a good start for the Ugly 3. But the problem is the corrupted UAW organization has damaged American auto industry for too long with no hope to recover. Whatever the confessions given by the Ugly 3's CEOs together with the head of UAW will buy them a few months' time before they go out of business once for all.

I believe their pay varies but is generally around $29.00 per hour. The fictitious $70 per hour incorporates retirees' benefits, of which the Big Three have a huge number by virtue of the length of time the companies have been in business.

"In 2006 a typical UAW-represented assembler at GM earned $27.81 per hour of straight-time labor. A typical UAW-represented skilled-trades worker at GM earned $32.32 per hour of straight-time labor. Between 2003 and 2006, the wages of a typical UAW assembler have grown at about the same rate as wages in the private sector as a whole – roughly 9 percent. Part of that growth is due to cost-of-living adjustments that have helped prevent inflation from eroding the purchasing power of workers’ wages."

Very good idea... but a better idea is to GET RID of that union. It has driven three of the largest car makers near bankruptcy with their incessant demands. Do you really think someone should be getting $75/hr to put tires on a car and own a million dollar home? Should GM be covering Viagara for employees (which is like $600 a month)? Didn't think so.

I work for a mortgage lender who does a lot of business in MI and all those workers are extremely overpaid, I've never seen anyone making less than 75K a year... and you know they're not all engineers and design experts. Same thing goes for Freddie and Fannie Mac- employees are WAY overpaid.

I am a UAW line worker. I make roughly $29 an hour. I go home exhausted and in pain EVERYDAY. I have had cancer due to the carcinogens in the plant. The wear and tear on our bodies and the hazards make our wage a fair one for what we have to endure. The jobs are extremely repetitious. Our wages and benefits are about 10% of the cost of the vehicle. I have a college education. I know how to read, write and spell my name. I don't want or expect any of you to feel sorry for me but rather educate yourself on the truth instead of listening to lies or make it up as you go.

I don't understand the hate and anger directed towards the workers. We don't make the policy. Do you hate the athlete making millions just to hit a ball or the actor, or the singer, or even idiots like Paris Hilton? These people truly make an insane amount of money.

The tax money that is being requested is our tax dollars to. I pay ALOT of taxes, I suspect more than the majority on this site, and if using my tax dollars will save anyone's job, I am all for it. We don't need anymore people out of work.

They don't understand your question because they don't know the true answer. I guess It is easier to spew hatred and make up stories and repeat rumors instead of admitting that you don't know something. I know what my wages and benefits are better than anyone that has never worked in a factory.
