THOMAS B | Setting up an Airline Company? |
How hard is it to set up an airline company fromscratch has anyone here ever contemplated doing it |

Are you referring to a commercial carrier or a small air taxi service at your local airport? The latter may be realistic if you have some experience working for one and some knowledge on how to run a business. The former is extremely difficult.
For a commercial airline, you'll need to raise tens of millions of dollars in startup capital to buy or lease aircraft, pay salaries, obtain government certifications, lease gates, buy fuel, pay airport fees, and to carry you through the early days when you're losing money. You also have to obtain government approval and show that your company has the expertise to operate safely. In order to do that, you have to hire experienced managers who understand safety laws, maintenance, operations, etc.
It's been done many times. Virgin America and Skybus are the two latest examples. However, they started with highly experienced executives and lots of cash. |

Freddy Laker did it but the big boys cut him out.
Richard Branson had a bit more savvy and was ready for them |

you would need a whole lot of cash to start with! Planes ain't cheap! I imagine you would also need some kind of accreditation also. In other words - REALLY hard! |

A friend of mine did.
He was brought in as a non-exec director for European Business Jets, and responsible for the initial fundraising.
It took them about a year from concept to the first flight, the bulk of which time was fundraising, and they had the credibility of the company founders being a few ex-senior-management from NetJets, who were looking to build a similar company (as owners, rather than employees) in Europe.
The hard part is, I suspect, the financing. If you don't have contacts to raise a few million personally through friends and family, then realistically you're talking about an AIM flotation. For that, you'll need both a NOMAD (Nominated Adviser) and a Broker registered with AIM. (Some companies will do both.) Getting a meeting with such people is relatively easy - persuading them to take on your case is a lot harder, not least because you'd need a few hundred thousand to pay their fees whether they ended up raising the money or failed in doing so!
If, on the other hand, you're talking about a local helicopter taxiing firm, then pretty much it's a question of finding:
- A helicopter
- A pilot with a PPL-H
- An insurer
- Customers
I suspect that the fourth would be the hardest - I know a couple of people who use such services, but they tend to stick with who they know, and found them through personal recommendation. |

well, i create businesses and sell the ideas, i have thought of a air line business but it is one of those industries where it is easier buying off an existing business than starting from scratch, having said that, i 'll give you a couple of my business opinions, hope you find them useful:
an easy way to start is to starting reading and listening to news about this industry.
then gradually try to create a profile of the basic requirements...
let me ask if you have ever worked in this industry or have any form of training?
if airline is such a huge step, try to create or get a franchise for a company that delivers services directly to an airline, printing bording passes 9security related though) , cleaning company for airlines , mini cars provider etc...
what happens is that you are more aware of the business environment,
i can go on and on... but you need to start small, remember there is always potential in every business making it, and there is always a way to start a business without having to spend a lot.
consider selling your idea to a big shot on a 60-40 basis with you physically managing the take off .
we can catch up on IM and run through loads of ideas...
best of luck and merry christmas |
